Nothing unusual about that, you might think, but the irony is that China is a very conservative country where porn magazines, DVDs and websites are strictly prohibited, and where sex is still a taboo subject.

HK sets aside 2 million HKD to aid mainland flood victims

HONG KONG, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Friday approved two grants totaling 2.05 million HK dollars to aid flood victims in China's southern provinces.

A government spokesperson said the grants will be handed to the Association of Chinese Evangelical Ministry and Oxfam for their relief efforts aimed at flood victims in Jiangxi and Yunnan.

The HKSAR government has earlier allocated 15.18 million HK dollars for Amity Foundation, the Salvation Army and World Vision to provide emergency services for flood victims in Guangxi, Hunan and Jiangxi.

Interview: China contributes to space-based information access a lot: UN official

ADDIS ABABA, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER) said on Thursday China plays a large role in providing technical support to national and regional organizations that they will have access to and use space-based information to mitigate the negative impact of global climate change.

The UN-SPIDER will officially open its third office in Beijing, China where it will effectively coordinate its entire program in ensuring the access to and develop the capacity to use all types of space-based information to support the full management of disaster management cycle.

Avatar plagiarism case heading to court

BEIJING, July 10 (Xinhuanet) -- A plagiarism case against Hollywood director James Cameron has been accepted by a Beijing court, setting up a confrontation between the movie mogul and an amateur Beijing writer.

"I was told to go to court next Monday to provide more material," writer Zhou Shaomou told China Daily on Friday.

McNuggets ruffle feathers

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhaunet) -- McDonald's Chicken McNuggets are under fire in Beijing after an investigation allegedly found its American counterpart contains chemical ingredients that are also used in cosmetics and Silly Putty.
The State Food and Drug Administration called for a national investigation targeting food safety of McNuggets in China on Tuesday, and the Beijing health supervision bureau claimed in an earlier report that it has already carried out its investigation on the fast food.

BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese consumers' concern over the safety of fast food is growing as watchdogs began to inspect McDonald's chicken nuggets, which are reported to contain "two harmful chemical ingredients," with the official conclusion yet to be drawn.
The State Food and Drug Administration is working with relevant departments to monitor McDonald's McNuggets and other products that may contain the additives, the agency said in a statement posted on its website Tuesday.

UNITED NATIONS, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a presidential statement on the sinking of the South Korean corvette Cheonan in March.
The statement, adopted by consensus, said that the Security Council "deplores the loss of life and injuries and expresses its deep sympathy and condolences to the victims and their families and to the people and government of the ROK (Republic of Korea)."
