"HOLLYWOOD - NBC's prime-time Summer Olympics coverage Sunday averaged 36 million viewers, the second most for the first Sunday of a Summer Olympics since individual viewership figures began being measured in 1987, according to figures released today by Nielsen.
The record for the first Sunday prime-time Summer Olympics telecast is 36.4 million for the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Television coverage of Olympic Games held in the United States traditionally draw larger audiences than those from outside the country because of larger overall interest in the Olympics along with the ability to show more events live because of no time difference or a considerably smaller time difference.
Viewership was up 11.46 percent from the 32.3 million for the first Sunday prime-time telecast of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Through three nights, NBC is averaging a record-35.8 million viewers for its prime-time coverage of the London Games, topping the previous record of 34.4 million set in 1996 and 16.99 percent more than the 30.6 million average for the first three nights of coverage of the 2008 Games."
