B105 - New Zealand Dogs Learn To Drive, Dec 10, 2012

"How smart is your dog, can it drive? A New Zealand animal adoption charity has come up with an ingenious way of raising awareness. To prove just how smart man’s best friend is they have successfully taught them how to drive. Yes you read that correctly. These dogs can drive. Although I wouldn’t be too comfortable sitting in the back whilst they cruise around the CBD the dogs have learned how to steer, use the pedals and shift in and out of park. It took the trainers from Auckland SPCA two months to train the dogs trainer Mark Vette explains “There's about 10 different behaviours involved, so we had to break them down into each behaviour… using the accelerator, feet on the wheel, turn the key on, feet on the brake and  the gear stick… So every time you get a new element you've got to train them for it and then link it all together, what we call chaining, then getting in the car and doing it”"
