Robot Looking for Oil Under the Ocean Finds a Rare Fish Graveyard Instead

Remotely operated vehicles scanning the seabed off the coast of Angola captured rare footage of several large deceased animals that have become home to a new ecosystem for scavengers and other marine creatures. The findings from the research were reported in the Plos One journal. The graveyard included a whale shark and three mobulid rays. It's an unusual find because little is known about "the fate of vertebrate...below 600 feet." Dr. Nick Higgs, from the University of Plymouth's Marine Institute, explained that "There's been lots of research on whale-falls, but we've never really found any of these other large marine animals on the sea bed." The video has allowed scientists to investigate how the animals fall and what impact their deaths have on the ecosystem. This graveyard had different effects on the local ecosystem than that of a whale fall.

Fortune threatened, Ukraine's richest man joins the fray

By Matt Robinson and Richard Balmforth MARIUPOL/KIEV, Ukraine (Reuters) - In their overalls and hard hats, the latest additions to the heady mix of security forces in Ukraine are the first tangible sign the rebel east's richest son is entering the fray. Multi-billionaire Rinat Akhmetov's miners and metalworkers joined police on patrol on Mariupol on Wednesday, cleared barricades of tires and pallets with diggers and heavy loaders and swept the debris from the gutted City Hall, ending the turmoil unleashed by the armed takeover of much of the region. Though largely symbolic, the scene showed the extent to which the crisis has come to threaten the interests of Ukraine's richest man and the lengths he will go to protect them. Akhmetov, whose fortune is estimated by Forbes magazine at $11.4 billion, has acquired almost feudal status in the industrial hub of Donetsk in the past 20 years - but the separatist rebellions there have altered the dynamics of power.

Paul McCartney Trades Dance Moves With a Robot in 'Appreciate' Video

Paul McCartney has updated the premise of Night at the Museum with a sci-fi twist. In his clip for "Appreciate," a track off last year's New album, "The Museum of Man" is patrolled by a robot named Newman (as in New-man). Then things come to life, and Newman looks quizzically as McCartney sings the downtempo pop rocker and all the other exhibits come to life. By the end of the video, Newman loosens up, does a little dance and even plonks out a few notes on an electric guitar.

Defending Sansa: Why Game of Thrones' Girly Girl Is The Hero We Need

There are a lot of truly evil people on Game of Thrones, yet the show's most hated character isn't the sadistic Joffrey or flay-happy Ramsay. It's Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), whose biggest offense seems to be that she's a teenage girl — and a girly one at that. The polar opposite to her sister Arya, Sansa embodies everything a young Westerosi noblewoman should be. But when people celebrate Game of Thrones for its depiction of empowering female characters, they typically point to Daenerys, Arya, Brienne and Cersei, all of whom actively fight against traditional ideals of womanhood and exhibit characteristics that are often associated with men.

Thousands flee California 'fire in the sky'

Los Angeles (United States) (AFP) - Thousands of people fled raging wildfires in southern California which destroyed homes and triggered evacuations at a nuclear power plant, a military base and a Legoland amusement park. The blazes, which also closed a major north-south highway, come amid record temperatures in the western US state, where the annual wildfire season typically starts much later in the year. At least 15 buildings have been destroyed, including three homes, said Michael Davis, fire chief in the seaside resort of Carlsbad, north of San Diego. \"At times it looks like there’s fire in the sky with the wind whipping back and forth,\" eyewitness Ryan Marble, waiting in a long line at a gas station to get fuel to evacuate, told The Los Angeles Times newspaper.

Pro-business Modi storms to historic election win

Narendra Modi thundered to victory on Friday in India's election, trouncing the ruling Nehru-Gandhi dynasty in a seismic political shift that gives the Hindu nationalist and his party a mandate for sweeping economic reform. Modi's landslide, the most resounding election victory India has seen in 30 years, was welcomed with a blistering rally on India's stock markets and raucous celebrations at offices across the country of his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where supporters danced, let off fireworks and handed out sweets. The BJP looked certain of a parliamentary majority, giving the 63-year-old former tea-seller ample room to advance reforms started 23 years ago by current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but which stalled in recent years.

Does Android crush iOS when it comes to usability? The answer may lie in a single screenshot

Late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs famously vowed to destroy Android because it is a stolen product. “I don’t want your money,” Jobs is said to have told Google’s Eric Schmidt during a meeting. “If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.” Whether or not you agree with Jobs in a broad sense, there is simply no denying that these two mobile platforms are very different in a number of key areas. And according to one mobile expert, a single screenshot shows that Android is years ahead of the iPhone and iOS when it comes to usability. First things first. Here’s the screenshot in

Get Ready for the Tax Collector to Come Calling

That could become commonplace if Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has his way. He is asking Congress to approve a measure that would require the Internal Revenue Service to hand over millions of unpaid tax bills to an army of private bill collectors, The Washington Post reported on Friday. Schumer’s plan would instruct the IRS to assign all so-called inactive tax receivables to private debt collectors if the IRS cannot locate the person who owes the money or if IRS agents fail to make contact with the person within a year. Of the other half, $1.2 billion would be used to hire new IRS agents and beef up enforcement, The Post reported, while $1.2 billion would be paid to the private debt collectors.

7 Things He Wishes He’d Known Before You Got Married

"The way we grew up influences how we treat, talk to, and divide responsibilities with our spouses," says Gary Chapman, Ph.D., author of The Five Love Languages. "The key is to spend your energy seeking solutions rather than defending your perspective." Next time you have a disagreement, try to focus on why your husband thinks and feels what he does. Now let me share where I'm coming from so we can figure out a way to make this work." Instead of setting you up as enemies, this approach helps affirm everyone's feelings, which brings you closer--and makes it easier to come up with relationship rules that work for both of you. "The danger of expecting your husband to know what you want, think, or feel is that it may cause resentment," says psychotherapist Marcia Naomi Berger, author of Marriage Meetings for Lasting Love.

What US cities will look like if sea levels rise 12 feet

Last week you may remember news that scientists have discovered that a big chunk of the West Antarctica ice sheet has been irrevocably destabilized. It's going to slowly melt into the ocean, raising worldwide sea levels by about four feet over the next decades and centuries. If the whole sheet goes, it would raise sea levels by about 10-13 feet.

Pomeranian Pooch Protests Haircut By Standing On Hind Legs, Looking Pissed

This is a dog that has been pushed too far, and has nothing left to lose. A Pomeranian pup in China named Jin Dan was apparently so upset about getting a shave that he protested by standing on his hind legs for nearly two days, according to Rocket News 24. We assume he had that terrifyingly adorable expression of malice the entire time. Jin Dan eventually came down on all fours, apparently resigned to his fate. As Rocket News and Gawker both pointed out, it's entirely possible that the story is made up, and the owner simply trained the dog

Muslim Reaction to Schoolgirl Abductions Debated

WASHINGTON — The faces of young girls held captive by Islamist militants have fueled anger and shock around the world and raised questions about why more Muslim leaders have not come forward in their defense. The CEO of the Cairo-based Karama group, Hibaaq Osman, is among those who feel there has not been enough "noise" in the Muslim community. "There are absolutely statements here and there, but in terms of really up in arms and going into the streets, we have not seen that,” Osman said. Her comments came after Boko Haram militants released a video of more than 100 of the captured girls, looking sad and frightened.

We've Got Secrets From the Dancing With the Stars Rehearsal Before Next Week's Finale!

Hard to believe we're almost at the finish line, but after a great season, Dancing With the Stars season 18 is almost in the books. I spent yesterday morning with the four remaining couples to find out secrets leading up to next Monday and Tuesday's finale (there will be an elimination on Monday night; three couples will fight for the Mirrorball on Tuesday) and also got a little crazy with Derek Hough (wait until you see that photo below!) Candace Cameron Bure and Mark Ballas Glamour: So now that you’ve revealed you’ll be dancing to New Kids on the Block in your freestyle... Candace: Amazing! Mark: No! Glamour: Ugh, fine! Let's get down to business. @DWTSGossip wants to know what you enjoy more, Mark? Teaching the dance, creating the dance, or performing the dance? Candace: It’s not teaching the dance to Candace. I can answer that for you! Mark: I really enjoy creating the dance. I don’t like teaching it. I love performing it. Even as a child when I had to compete, I hated having to practice. I hated the lessons. It just goes on and on and on. I just wanted to get out there and do it.

As solar panels boom, it was the simple business model that the big energy players missed

Solar panels are now remaking the energy equation in the U.S. and breaking records for installations every quarter: There were more solar panels installed in the U.S. over the last 18 months than the last 30 years. But when it comes to making money off of this solar boom, some of the largest energy companies in the U.S. have (so far) left money on the table. Or that they didn’t have deep knowledge of how cheap solar panels would one day become. At the World Energy Innovation Forum at the Tesla factory in Fremont, Calif. this week, the CEO of GE, Jeff Immelt, said during an onstage interview that GE had focused so intently on how bad the solar panel business was that they “missed SolarCity.” “My God I wish I had thought of that,” said Immelt.

Russian Cybersnake May Be Putin's Secret Weapon

Someone, however, has managed to do just that to Belgium's foreign ministry, which had to quarantine its entire computer system last Saturday and only managed to restore the work of the passport and visa processing systems on Thursday. Similar attacks seem to be taking place elsewhere in Europe, as Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders told the Belga news agency after meeting with a senior French diplomat that "everyone (on the European level) notes at this moment a very powerful pickup in hacking activity probably coming from the east and in any case having to do with Ukraine." Under the name Agent.BTZ -- a generic one, automatically generated to classify a then-unknown piece of malicious code – it hit the U.S. Department of Defense back in 2008. The attack became public knowledge two years later, after Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Thousands flee Iraq government assault on rebel-held Falluja

By Ned Parker, Isra' al-Rubei'i and Raheem Salman BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Thousands of civilians have fled Falluja since last week after the Iraqi military intensified shelling in a new bid to crush a five-month old Sunni uprising, killing scores of people in what residents describe as massive indiscriminate bombardment. The mortars, artillery and what residents call "barrel bombs" rained for at least seven days on Falluja - a city that was the nemesis of U.S. troops a decade ago and is now the main battle ground in a war pitting the Shi'ite-led government against rebellious Sunni tribal chiefs and an al Qaeda offshoot. More than 420,000 people have already escaped the two main cities of western Anbar province, Falluja and Ramadi, in fighting since the start of the year. Residents say the new pounding of Falluja's residential neighborhoods appears aimed at driving out all remaining civilians in preparation for an all-out assault to defeat armed groups once and for all.

Unemployment Insurance, Tax Cuts Hit Senate Buzz Saw

It’s not every day that a vote in the U.S. Congress aggravates both the business community and advocates for the long-term unemployed, but the Senate managed such a feat on Thursday. Republicans filibustered a procedural action meant to move forward on a two-year extension of dozens of tax breaks, which could also have served as a vehicle for a renewal of federal unemployment insurance. In a complicated procedural move, Senate Democrats tried to take up a bill already passed by the House of Representatives that would create tax incentives to encourage businesses to hire more veterans. The tax cuts, a large proportion of which are business friendly, include a tax credit for research and development, small businesses, and other business-friendly measures.

In an email Friday, NFLPA chief DeMaurice Smith said union officials believe agents should ''consider the Saints' efforts'' to push for legislation that would substantially reduce benefits to players who are hurt outside the 17-week regular season, when player salaries are paid. Under legislation which has passed the Louisiana House of Representatives and awaits consideration in the state Senate, workers compensation benefits could be based on per diems - rather than the full annual value of a contract - if injuries occurred in the offseason. ''We are actively involved in the effort to defeat this bill but we feel it is important for you to consider the Saints' efforts given your representation of our players and the advice you would have to give to any free agent player considering an opportunity to play for the Saints,'' Smith wrote.

Rev. Graham: Christ's ‘True Followers' Can't Endorse Gay Marriage Regardless What President, Media, Courts Say

“True followers of Jesus Christ, whose salvation is based entirely upon God’s Word, cannot endorse same-sex marriage, regardless of what our President, the Congress, the Supreme Court, the media or the latest Gallup poll says about the matter,” said Rev. Graham in his May 2014 column for Decision magazine. “This moral issue has been settled by God Himself and is not subject to man-made revisions or modifications,” he said.

Forget the White House, Marco Rubio Might Be Lucky Just to Be Reelected

Forget the White House, Marco Rubio Might Be Lucky Just to Be Reelected He still makes the presidential wannabee lists, but Rubio might be lucky in 2016 just to hold his Senate seat. Florida Senator Marco Rubio made news on Sunday’s This Week when asked by Jonathan Karl if he considered himself ready to be president: “I do … but I think that’s true for multiple other people that would want to run … I mean, I’ll be 43 this month, but the other thing that perhaps people don’t realize, I’ve served now in public office for the better part of 14 years,” said Rubio.

Cubs: Trade forces lining up with Samardzija, Hammel

ST. LOUIS This Cubs season is almost 25 percent complete, which is still a long way toward September, much less the finishing touches on a renovated Wrigley Field or the 2020 TV bonanza (as long as the cable bubble doesnt burst). As the Cubs packed up after a 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday afternoon, they would leave Busch Stadium with the worst record in baseball at 13-26, percentage points below the tanking Houston Astros. Which makes you wonder where the Cubs would be if they didnt get Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castros bounce-back starts, Emilio Bonifacios hot streak, Welington Castillos step forward, Mike Olts eight homers, Hector Rondons 1.47 ERA and some very good starting pitching. The trade forces are lining up with Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, the steady sign-and-flip guy who let one bad inning ruin his getaway day.

You May Have Just Missed the Worst Argument Ever Made in the Fight to Ban Gay Marriage

Lithograph depicting Pocahontas saving the life of Capt. John Smith. I won’t hide the ball here, so here it is: Gay people should not be able to get married because Pocahontas married John Rolfe. This argument was actually made in federal court Tuesday, before the judges of the Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit in Richmond, Virginia. They were hearing a challenge to Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage.

Pakistan Wants Drones, and It Doesn't Need America's Permission to Get Them

Unfortunately for Pakistan, the idea of giving top-notch armed drones to Islamabad has been a nonstarter among U.S. officials for years. Unfortunately for the U.S., Islamabad doesn't need America's permission to get them. Already, Pakistan has remote-piloted aircraft. Islamabad uses surveillance drones to provide the military with a real-time picture of its restive border areas or counterterrorism operations.

Israel's Demographic Time-Bomb: An Arab-Majority State?

As in Arab Muslim countries, Palestinians have a very high birth rate - so high, in fact, that in a few decades to come, Arabs may outnumber Jews within the land of Israel. Such an event would clearly pose a dire threat to Israel and its mandated Jewish identity. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his conservative, nationalist Likud Party have passed new measures to attract more Jews to relocate to West Bank settlements. These incentives have outraged Palestinians who believe the Israeli leader is undermining peace talks.

Is Air-Sea Battle Useless?

A lot has been written in The National Interest and elsewhere concerning China’s growing military capabilities. In the U.S. defense community, this discussion has centered on the Air-Sea Battle operational concept (ASB). It is designed to allow the U.S. military to gain access to littoral waters in the face of China’s anti-access/area denial doctrine. This month’s skirmishes in the South China Sea offer further proof that ASB is growing increasingly irrelevant and possibly dangerous, though not in the ways imagined by its most ardent critics.

Vietnam PM Texts Nation Amid Anti-China Riots

Vietnam's prime minister sent a text message to millions of citizens urging them to act in defense of the country's sovereignty following China's deployment of on oil rig in disputed waters, but said that "bad elements" shouldn't be allowed to engage in violence. The message, sent late Thursday and Friday to subscribers via major state-owned cellphone operators, didn't directly condemn the riots that have broken out this week following China's decision to deploy the rig off the coast of central Vietnam on May 1. Anti-China protests that started peacefully have ended in violence and vandalism, with 400 factories suspected of having links with China destroyed or damaged by mobs. "The prime minister requests and calls on every Vietnamese to boost their patriotism to defend the fatherland's sacred sovereignty with actions in line with the law," the text message said.

Guess What’s Wrong with the Married Couples in These Movies?  (5 photos)

By: Ivy Jacobson for TheNest.com Ever notice the abundance of movies that feature married couples who can't stand each other or have serious issues? Revolutionary Road, Fatal Attraction and Blue Valentine all come to mind. However, Seth Rogen also noticed and said in a recent interview with Studio 360 that most movies now feature such unrealistic marriages, where couples fight all the time, and his wife, actress Lauren Miller, agreed. "In a comedy [movie about marriage], that's almost non-existent," Seth says. "An actual healthy couple that really likes each other. In movies, they like to portray marriage like, 'Oh the wife and husband are always arguing and bickering.' For me and my wife…the easiest part of my life is my marriage. Like if everything was as smooth and easy and fun as my relationship with my wife then I would have a much easier time getting through the day. We really get along and we like the same stuff." So guess what's wrong with the married couples in the following five movies? Absolutely nothing. Hollywood-more like these, please! The Supreme Court Justices’ New Favorite Way to Insult Each Other

Nobody should be surprised when the sharp teeth come out at the Supreme Court in March and April. Dahlia Lithwick writes about the courts and the law for Slate. In some cases the accusations seem to be about the law—justice is blind, etc.—but more and more, what the dissenters are implying (or straight out saying) is that the majority is simply “blind” to reality, to how things work, to the world as the rest of us experience it. It’s not legal blindness.

Coalition Of Black Pastors Speaks Out Against Gay Marriage

A coalition of black pastors have condemned gay marriage, saying it's incorrect to compare the fight for equal marriage rights to the civil rights movement. The Christian, conservative Thomas More Law Center filed an amicus brief in Michigan's gay marriage trial Wednesday on behalf of 110 black pastors from Detroit, elsewhere in Michigan, and Ohio. The state's ban on gay marriage was overturned in March by U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman, but the ruling was put on hold as the case is considered by the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Syrian war prompts unusual cultural exchange with Israel

Nitai Ben Yosef was on duty as a paramedic at this Israeli army base this winter when eight wounded Syrians approached the border. He cared for them alone in the back of an ambulance as it made its way 1.5 hours across northern Israel to a hospital in Nahariyya, on the Mediterranean coast. “In trauma, screaming children are the good ones because you know they’re conscious and breathing,” says Mr. Ben Yosef, who at 21 is in charge of the base’s mobile intensive care unit. It’s a trip that Ben Yosef, whose base is only three miles from Syria, has made frequently as a key actor in the Israeli army’s rescue of more than 900 critically wounded Syrians since March 2013.
