IRISH TIMES - Bulgaria's government resigns, Feb 20, 2013

Bulgarian prime minister Boiko Borisov speaks in the Parliament in Sofia earlier this year. His government resigned from office this morning after nationwide protests against high electricity prices. Photograph: Reuters
"Bulgaria's government has resigned from office following nationwide protests against high electricity prices, joining a long list of European administrations felled by austerity. Prime minister Boiko Borisov had tried to calm protests by sacking his finance minister, pledging to cut power prices and punish foreign-owned companies but the measures failed to defuse discontent and protests continued last night. Many Bulgarians are deeply unhappy over high energy costs, power monopolies, low living standards and corruption in the European Union's poorest country."

PETITION SITE - Stop Elephant Poaching in Kenya!, Feb 19, 2013

Please sign the petition today!
"China's booming economy and demand for ivory is causing an upsurge of illegal elephant poaching in Kenya. On January 16, 2013, the Washington Post reported that 638 pieces of elephant ivory were seized at Kenya's main port. At the current poaching rates, conservationists wonder if there is any hope for saving elephants as a species. The rise in poaching is not only an environmental issue, but an economic one as well. Diminishing numbers of elephants in Kenya means a loss of revenue from tourists who travel to the country to see the elephants."
