"UK scientists exploring the ocean floor in the Caribbean have discovered an "astounding" set of hydrothermal vents, the deepest anywhere in the world.
Deploying a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) in the Cayman Trough, they stumbled across a previously-unknown site nearly 5000m below the surface.

"A massive car bomb explosion in the Syrian capital, Damascus, has killed at least 53 people and injured another 200, reports say.
Syria blamed "terrorist groups linked to al-Qaeda" for the blast, which hit a central district near the headquarters of Syria's ruling Baath Party.
TV pictures showed images of bodies, wrecked cars and shattered windows.
The violence comes as Russia and the Arab League say they want to broker direct government-opposition talks.
No group has said they carried out the attack."

"Bulgarian MPs have voted to accept the resignation of Prime Minister Boiko Borisov and his government. The vote opens the way for an early election, now expected in April rather than the scheduled July. Mr Borisov's surprise resignation followed nationwide street protests against high electricity prices and austerity measures. On Tuesday clashes between protesters and police left at least 14 people injured. The government's resignation was accepted in a 209-5 vote. President Rosen Plevneliev will now try to appoint an interim cabinet, to take the country through to early elections."

"South Africa's top detective is to take over the Oscar Pistorius inquiry amid attempted murder accusations against current lead officer Hilton Botha.
Detective Botha was removed pending the result of an investigation into seven counts of attempted murder.
National police commissioner Mangwashi Phiyega announced the change after a third day of testimony at Mr Pistorius's bail hearing."
