PETITION SITE - Crack Down on Whale Fishing in Iceland!, Jun 06, 2013

Please sign the petition today!
"celand continues to hunt endangered fin whales in defiance of an international ban, and exports most of its whale meat to Japan. This year, Iceland plans to slaughter 180 of its whales.  Most whale meat is intended for human consumption, but a recent joint statement by the Animal Welfare Institute, Environmental Investigation Agency, Whale and Dolphin Conservation and the Iruka & Kujira (Dolphin and Whale) Action Network stated that Iceland planned to use some of their whale meat in luxury dog treats. These plans were thankfully halted, but the idea suggests a disturbing market niche that could potentially be explored in other ways. Using endangered whale meat in dog treats and similar items is an inexcusable waste of life. Please sign the petition to tell Iceland's Minister of Fisheries to crack down on whale fishing in Iceland!"

The London Free Press - Mars rover heads to Mount Sharp, Jun 06, 2013

This self-portrait of NASA's Mars Curiosity rover is shown in this NASA handout composite image released May 30, 2013. Curiosity is on the road toward Mount Sharp, the primary target of a planned two-year mission to search for habitats that could have supported life, NASA officials said June 5, 2013. (REUTERS/NASA/Handout via Reuters)
"CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity is on the road toward Mount Sharp, the primary target of a planned two-year mission to search for habitats that could have supported life, officials said on Wednesday. Ten months ago the rover landed inside a giant impact basin near the planet’s equator, a site selected because of the 3-mile-high (5-km-high) mound of layered rock rising from the crater floor. Instead of heading directly to Mount Sharp, scientists wanted to explore an area in the opposite direction where images from orbit showed three different types of rocks coming together."

CALGARY HERALD - New fossil evidence shows our cute, hyperactive early relative, Jun 06, 2013

New fossil evidence shows our cute, hyperactive early relative
"WASHINGTON - New fossil evidence of the earliest complete skeleton of an ancient primate suggests it was a hyperactive, wide-eyed creature so small you could hold a couple of them in your hand — if only they would stay still long enough. The 55-million-year-old fossil dug up in central China is one of our first primate relatives and it gives scientists a better understanding of the complex evolution that eventually led to us. This tiny monkey-like creature weighed an ounce or less and wasn't a direct ancestor. Because it's so far back on the family tree it offers the best clues yet of what our earliest direct relatives would have been like at that time, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature."
