AL JAZEERA - The front lines of Taksim Square, Jun 05, 2013

"Istanbul, Turkey -  During the day-time, protests in Turkey's largest city have been comparatively  peaceful in the last week but after sundown, confrontations between police and protesters have been more heated. The epicenter of these clashes has been at Taksim Square and Beshiktash Stadium, in the heart of Istanbul. As night settled on Tuesday, thousands gathered in front of the stadium. Police used water cannons and tear gas, forcing people to flee towards Taksim. Afterwards, they stormed a nearby area and arrested more than 30 people. Protesters claim that plainclothes police detained and physically assaulted people. The protesters include leftist coalitions, football clubs, dissatisfied youth, and secularists. Some demonstrators have ripped up streets, street signs, and even bus shelters to create makeshift barricades."

HERALD SUN - God's bathtub: Australian lake untouched by climate change, Jun 05, 2013

Blue Lake on North Stradbroke Island has remain unchanged for thousands of years, despite changes in the climate.
"SCIENTISTS have identified a unique Australian lake which has been untouched by climate change and appears to be in the same condition as it was 7500 years ago. Blue Lake, one of the largest lakes on North Stradbroke Island, off the south Queensland coast, has been the focus of a project by University of Adelaide researchers. They studied the lake's water discharge, water quality and comparisons of historical photos over 117 years, as well as fossil pollen and algae, to understand its history over thousands of years. The results, published online in the journal Freshwater Biology, show the lake has remained relatively stable and resilient for millennia. The study's lead author Cameron Barr says Blue Lake is more than 10 metres deep but is so clear you can see to the bottom."

TV3 Xposé Entertainment - Miley Cyrus: I party hard, Jun 05, 2013

"Miley Cyrus insists that even though she likes to party she is the "hardest-working person" around. Miley Cyrus says that even though she's a "self-proclaimed party animal" people shouldn't underestimate her dedicated work ethic. The 20-year-old singer's new track We Can't Stop revolves around the themes of dancing and drinking until the early hours. Despite the party-hard lyrics in her songs and her fun-loving nature, Miley is prepared to work hard too. "People think of me as a party animal, which I am: a self-proclaimed party animal," she laughed in an interview with MTV News. "But I also am the hardest-working person you'll ever know." Miley became a teen idol thanks to her role in the Hannah Montana franchise, a former Disney Channel sitcom. The star hopes that people will now understand why she wants to take a new direction with her career. "Moms, they remember their daughters watching [Hannah Montana], and kids remember watching the show, but that's not who they think I am," she explained."

BBC News - Human ancestors' diet changed 3.5 million years ago, Jun 05, 2013

Artists impression of Australopithecus afarensis -

"A new analysis of early human teeth from extinct fossils has found that they expanded their diets about 3.5 million years ago to include grasses and possibly animals. Before this, humanlike creatures - or hominins - ate a forest-based diet similar to modern gorillas and chimps. Researchers analysed fossilised tooth enamel of 11 species of hominins and other primates found in East Africa. The findings appear in four papers published in PNAS journal. Like chimpanzees today, many of our early human ancestors lived in forests and ate a diet of leaves and fruits from trees, shrubs and herbs. But scientists have now found that this changed 3.5 million years ago in the species Australopithecus afarensis and Kenyanthropus platyops."

HAARETZ - Putin denies S-300 missile system has already been sent to Syria, Jun 04, 2013

S-300

"Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday defended Moscow's arms sales to the Syrian government, but denied that the advanced S-300 systems had already been delivered. Putin told a news conference after a summit with European Union leaders that Russia did not want to upset the military balance in the region and all its arms sales to Syria were inline with international law. The president's remarks confirm a Russian newspaper report last Friday that Moscow was set to deliver the first shipment of S-300 air defense missiles to President Bashar Assad's regime in 2014. The confusion comes after Assad told Hezbollah's Al-Manar television station in an interview last Thursday that his regime had already received the first shipment."
