Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sacked Yuri Luzhkov, the mayor of Moscow, on Tuesday after weeks of putting pressure on him to step down voluntarily.
Mr Luzhkov had been mayor of the city since 1992 and was one of the most powerful independent figures remaining in Russian politics. The move took Kremlin watchers by surprise, as most assumed the Kremlin would negotiate Mr Luzhkov’s resignation. The mayor had been the target of attacks in the state-controlled media since coming into conflict with Mr Medvedev earlier this month
