(CNN) -- Spain won the World Cup for the first time as an extra-time goal from Andres Iniesta gave them a last-gasp victory over the Netherlands in the final at Soccer City on Sunday night.

A final so far removed from the Beautiful Game, so far out of keeping with such a largely upbeat tournament, was settled four minutes from the end of extra time by Andres Iniesta, so crowning Spain champions of the world for the first time. They had waited so long what was an extra half-hour?

"Every World Cup has its own history and its own culture. It was a World Cup in a new continent with new culture and therefore it must be analysed on different levels. If you look at the enthusiasm in South Africa and the TV audiences around the world then it was a special World Cup,“ Blatter told 5 live's Sportsweek in a interview ahead of Sunday night's final between the Netherlands and Spain.
