US President Donald Trump said he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be “deployed to the appropriate areas” in response to “extremely provocative” statements by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
Trump said he was acting “in case these foolish and provocative statements are more than that. Words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences.
I hope this will not be one of those cases.” He did not say where the two submarines would be deployed, in accordance with US military protocol.
Medvedev recently threatened the US in response to Trump’s ultimatums to Moscow to agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face harsh sanctions.
Russia and the US have the most nuclear weapons in the world. Trump did not specify whether he was referring to nuclear-powered or nuclear-armed submarines in his Truth Social post.
In the post, the US president wrote: “Based on the extremely provocative statements of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is now Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to the appropriate areas.”
Trump and Medvedev have recently engaged in a series of personal attacks on each other on social media.
This came after Trump set a new deadline for Putin to end the war by August 8, something Putin has shown no intention of doing.
