Thai officials are investigating the Netherlands native regarding his alleged involvement in a Thai sex slave gang and for the disappearance of a young woman he may have recruited for the gang, according to the National Inquirer.
Brantley: Gov’t Borrowing Puts National Bank at Risk :: The St. Kitts-Nevis
Opposition Leader Hon. Mark Brantley says the government’s reliance on the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank (SKNANB), and others, to finance their borrowing is exposing the banks to great risk.
Brantley was at the time addressing a large gathering of businesspersons at the St. Kitts-Nevis Chamber of Industry and Commerce’s 28th Annual Private Sector Banquet, held on Saturday (July 10).
According to Brantley, the mounting national debt was hindering the federal government’s ability to borrow from sources outside of the country, resulting in it turning to local banks.
Regional parliamentary conference July 23-30, Trinidad
The idea of a fixed term for a Prime Minister, the concept to recall of Members of Parliament and the concept of referenda will be discussed at the regional parliamentary conference which will be held in Trinidad between July 23 to 30.
Under the theme "Modernisation of Caribbean Parliaments: Forging our own identity", an estimated 60 delegates representing the Parliaments of the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic region will gather at the Parliament Chamber and the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port of Spain for discussions.
The role of Women Parliamentarians in the modern Caribbean Parliament will also be examined.
Other topics include: "Parliament as an autonomous body—separation from the Executive branch of Government; Providing a platform for innovative leadership within the parliamentary system; Making the legislature more accessible and interactive for voters; Effective measures of ensuring accountability and transparency in government and the most effective use of a committee system in small legislatures.

The American Samoa Community College has been moved from probation to a warning status.
The move by the accreditation body for United States schools and colleges, means the school’s status has improved since the accreditation team’s last visit in April.
The school has been on probation for the last two years and the warning status is the least serious of the three-levels of sanctions that can be imposed by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
The Commission says it would not renew the college’s accreditation until it addressed 11 recommendations.
The college has so far fulfilled seven of those and has made major progress on two more.
A college spokesperson, Dr Kathleen Kolhoff, says it will send a follow-up report on the four remaining issues by the 1st of October.

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — American Samoa is convening a constitutional convention to consider changes to its fundamental laws.
More than 100 delegates on Monday launched the convention, the first in the U.S. territory in 26 years.
Several proposals would grant American Samoa more autonomy from U.S. oversight. The U.S. secretary of the interior would lose the power to override vetoes and to review, overturn or intervene in appeals of decisions by the High Court of American Samoa.
The interior secretary also would lose authority to appoint the chief justice and the associate justice. They would instead be appointed by the territorial governor and confirmed by the Legislature.
Constitutional changes would go to a vote in November and eventually need to be approved by U.S. Congress.

Islamist attack in Algeria worst in a year
ALGIERS - An explosion killed four people in the east of Algeria as they were travelling in their car, local sources told AFP Friday. The victims, local traders who were part of a hunting party, were travelling between the towns of Khenchela and Tebessa, near the border with Tunisia, at the time of the blast.
Investigators are still trying to establish what caused the explosion but local sources said there were a lot of French landmines dating back to the war of independence still buried in the region.
But one other source said the explosion was caused by a home-made device set off remotely, in a region where Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is active.
On June 25, five people including a child and a baby were wounded when gunmen opened up with automatic weapons on a wedding party near Tebessa in an attack the security forces attributed to extremists.

On Tuesday, 23-year-old 1st Lt. Christopher Goeke, 34-year-old Staff Sgt. Christopher Stout and 27-year-old Staff Sgt. Sheldon Tate died in Kandahar City, Afghanistan when insurgents attacked their unit with rifle, rocket propelled grenade and small arms fire.
Wednesday may be the worst single-day loss for Bragg units since April 2007. Nine 82nd Airborne Division Paratroopers died and 20 were wounded when a bomb detonated outside a building they were occupying in As Sadah, Iraq on April 23, 2007 .
Funeral services have not yet been set for any of the men.

Italian PM faces confidence vote
BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhuanet) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has won a confidence vote from the Senate as his approval rating falls dangerously low. The vote was on an unpopular 25 billion euro austerity package to get Italy's budget back in the black.
The survival of Berlusconi's government has been threatened by a corruption scandal and an open rift with his coalition partner Gianfranco Fini.
In Rome there were many disapproving voices.
Gianni Bozzi, Rome resident, said, "I hope this government will fall, I stand on the other side and I hope the vote will be against the survival of this government. I think this government should fall because there is too much talking and not enough doing."
It didn't fall as Berlusconi still commands a large majority in parliament.
Using the confidence vote to pass legislation also forces internal dissenters into line.
The austerity budget which includes pay cuts in the public sector and drastic reduction to regional funding is a trend across Europe.

BEIJING, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. senate on Thursday passed an ambitious financial overhaul bill, touted as the most comprehensive since the 1930s Great Depression and meant to prevent a rerun of the current devastating financial crisis.
The 2,300-page bill touches almost very corner of the ever-growing financial services industry, setting up strict rules on financial activities and establishing new measures to protect consumers.
U.S. Democratic Senator Christopher Todd claimed the bill would make sure "we never ever again go through what this nation has been through."

Only 29 were dead and 21 others were wounded, a local police officer told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The latest casualties have been confirmed by an official from the health office of Sulaimaniyah.
