This year’s displays will be bigger than ever, featuring 2,000 pounds of fireworks launched from the Skylon Tower, down in the Niagara Gorge, and for the first time, directly above the Falls themselves! The outdoor celebration also features a variety of food and beverage vendors, as well as an outdoor licensed area. As always, the presence of security and policing will be on-site to ensure everyone’s safety throughout the night. Last year’s New Year’s Eve broadcast on Global peaked at 12:01 a.m. with 1.9 million viewers with a total reach of 4.8 million (2+ national) tuning in, while the annual event itself attracted over 60,000 people to Queen Victoria Park.

 "The Italian Nobel prize-winning neurologist Rita Levi-Montalcini has died at the age of 103. Dr Levi-Montalcini lived through anti-semitic discrimination under fascism to become one of Italy's top scientists and most respected figures. She won acclaim for her work on cells, which furthered understanding of a range of conditions, including cancer. In 1986 she shared the Nobel prize for medicine with biochemist Stanley Cohen for research carried out in the US. Her niece, Piera Levi-Montalcini, told La Stampa newspaper that she had died peacefully "as if sleeping" after lunch."

 "At least 22 people have been killed and tens more injured in a series of explosions across Iraq, officials say. In the deadliest single attack, seven people were killed in the town of Mussayib, to the south of the capital Baghdad. At least two people were killed in the southern city of Hilla when a bomb exploded in a busy street. Violence has decreased in Iraq since its peak in 2006 and 2007, but insurgent attacks remain common. Five were killed when a car bomb targeted Shia pilgrims in a district of Baghdad."

"Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that the German economic climate in 2013 will be "even more difficult". In her new year message, she also cautioned that the eurozone debt crisis was far from over. However, she did say that reforms designed to address the roots of the problem were beginning to bear fruit. Her comments appeared to contradict German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who said last week that the worst of the crisis was over. In a taped interview to be broadcast later on Monday, Mrs Merkel urged Germans to be more patient."

In a small music shop tucked in a street in central Tripoli, the owner is busily tuning a guitar. Rows upon rows of instruments line the store's walls. The gleaming, colourful electric guitars are in a league of their own against other instruments, including the traditional darbuka (drum). This is where a heavy metal band that recently re-grouped meets three times a week after sunset."

 "Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has suffered "new complications" after a cancer operation in Cuba, his vice-president has said. In a televised address from Cuba, Nicolas Maduro said Mr Chavez continued to be in a "delicate state". Mr Chavez underwent his fourth cancer operation on 11 December in Cuba but suffered a respiratory infection. The president - who has been in power since 1999 - is due to be sworn in on 10 January for another six-year term. Mr Maduro did not give details about Mr Chavez's condition but said the latest complications were connected to the respiratory infection."
