BBC News - Phil Spector film picketed by Lana Clarkson's publicist, Mar 16, 2013

Al Pacino as Phil Spector and Phil Spector

"Friends of Lana Clarkson, the actress murdered by music producer Phil Spector, have been protesting at a screening of the film about his trial. The movie, starring Al Pacino, focuses on his relationship with his defence lawyer, played by Helen Mirren. But the group against the film say it is too sympathetic towards Spector's defence case. Clarkson's former publicist, Edward Lozzi, called the film a "slap in the face". He told the Hollywood Reporter the group initially hoped to stop the film from being made, but now wanted to ensure it receives no Emmy award recognition. Spector was convicted of second-degree murder in 2009 for shooting Clarkson in his California home in 2003."

BBC News - Early HIV drugs 'functionally cure about one in 10', Mar 16, 2013

HIV

"Rapid treatment after HIV infection may be enough to "functionally cure" about a 10th of those diagnosed early, say researchers in France. They have been analysing 14 people who stopped therapy, but have since shown no signs of the virus resurging. It follows reports of a baby girl being effectively cured after very early treatment in the US. However, most people infected with HIV do not find out until the virus has fully infiltrated the body. The group of patients, known as the Visconti cohort, all started treatment within 10 weeks of being infected. The patients were caught early as they turned up in hospital with other conditions and HIV was found in their blood."

BBC News - US to boost nuclear missile defence to counter N Korea, Mar 16, 2013

"The US plans to bolster its missile defences on the west coast to counter the threat from North Korea, Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has announced. He said the US would add 14 interceptors, which can shoot down missiles in flight, to 30 already in place in California and Alaska by 2017. But the final phase of the US European Missile Defence programme is being scrapped to partly fund the project. Due to begin in 2022, it would have sited interceptors in eastern Europe. Mr Hagel cited a "series of irresponsible and reckless provocations" recently by North Korea. Pyongyang carried out a third nuclear test last month. A statement in North Korean state media last month also threatened the US with a pre-emptive nuclear strike."

BBC News - Raila Odinga files Kenya election appeal, Mar 16, 2013

"Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga has filed a Supreme Court appeal against Uhuru Kenyatta's narrow victory in the presidential election's first round. Mr Kenyatta beat Mr Odinga comfortably by 50.07% to 43.28% on 4 March, avoiding a run-off by only 8,100 votes. But Mr Odinga has accused the electoral authorities of manipulating the result. Police fired tear gas to disperse about 100 supporters of his Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) who had gathered outside the Supreme Court. The police had warned them that they would not be allowed to do so. BBC News - Cameron speech: We are here to fight, Mar 16, 2013

"David Cameron has said the Conservatives have "never been more up for the task of turning our country around", at the party's spring conference in London. The prime minister sought to reassure grassroots members about the party's direction after its defeat at last month's Eastleigh by-election. The poll loss has prompted some Tories to demand a shift to the right. Mr Cameron told party activists: "We are here to fight. We are here to win." He said that with fewer than 1,000 days until the next general election, activists needed to get the party's message out and "win the majority our country desperately needs". "Anyone in this party who is in any doubt who we should be fighting, what we should be debating, where our energies should be focused, I tell you - our battle is with Labour," he said. Labour said the government needed to build a country where "prosperity is fairly shared" - but this would not happen under Mr Cameron."

BBC News - Syria conflict: General 'defects to rebels', Mar 16, 2013

A tank burns in Daraa, Syria, 9 March
"A Syrian army general has reportedly defected to the opposition, saying that morale in the army had collapsed. A man identified by opposition activists as General Mohammed Ezz al-Din Khalouf announced his defection in a video shown on al-Arabiya TV. He is said to have reached safety in neighbouring Jordan. There was no comment from the Syrian government. New York-based group Human Rights Watch has again accused the government of using cluster bombs against civilians. An estimated 70,000 people have been killed and one million have fled Syria since the uprising against President Bashar al-Assad began two years ago."
