"A Lion Air passenger plane with over 100 people on board crashed off the coast of Bali when it overran a runway and slammed into the sea. At least 22 people have been transferred to hospital with head wounds and broken bones. No one was killed in the incident, and rescue teams have managed to evacuate the plane. The company's spokesperson said 101 passengers and a seven-member crew were aboard the aircraft when it crashed; earlier reports suggested there were 172 passengers. The plane is sitting in shallow waters 200 to 300 meters off the end of the runway, local media reported. The cabin broke apart as the aircraft crashed into the sea. The cause of the accident has yet to be determined. The plane had flown from Bandung, the capital of the West Java province, and was landing in Bali Ngurah Rai Airport. Lion Airlines is Indonesia's largest privately owned airline, and a leading budget airline. In 2012, the company transported some 24 million people. The company is banned from operating in the European Union due to its failure to meet safety standards."

HOUSTON CHRONICLE - Beijing reports its 1st case of new bird flu virus, Apr 13, 2013

"BEIJING (AP) — A 7-year-old girl has become Beijing's first confirmed case of a new strain of the bird flu virus that has killed 11 people and sickened 37 others in eastern China, officials said Saturday. The girl, whose parents are in the live poultry trade, was admitted to a hospital Thursday with symptoms of fever, sore throat, coughing and headache, the Beijing Health Bureau said. She was confirmed to be infected with the H7N9 virus on Saturday after tests by disease control and prevention centers, the bureau said. The case in China's capital is the first one reported outside eastern China, where the virus was first spotted in late March, prompting massive slaughtering of live fowl and bans on the poultry trade in several cities, including the financial hub of Shanghai. Shanghai, the center of the outbreak, has reported 21 cases, including seven fatalities. One person was discharged after recovering, the local government has said."

WASHINGTON POST - Alert Mubarak enters Egypt court for retrial and waves to supporters, judges recuses himself, Apr 13, 2013

(Amr Nabil/ Associated Press ) - Egyptian medics and army personnel escort former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak from a helicopter ambulance after it landed at Maadi Military Hospital following a hearing in his retrial in Cairo, Egypt, Saturday, April 13, 2013. Egypt’s highest court in January ordered a retrial for Mubarak, for failing to stop the killing of 900 protestors in the 2011 unrest that ousted him, after accepting an appeal against his life sentence, citing procedural failings.
"CAIRO — An upbeat and alert-looking Hosni Mubarak waved to his supporters after he was wheeled into a Cairo courtroom on Saturday for the first session of his retrial on charges of complicity in the killing of demonstrators during the 2011 revolt that led to his ouster. The procedural session quickly ended when the judge recused himself, referring the case to an appeals court to choose a replacement."

GUAM residents pray as they face N. Korea threats, Apr 13, 2013

"How seriously should Guam residents take North Korea's missile threats? That question is on the minds of island residents as April 15, a special date for North Koreans, nears. "Every time I think about the threat, I pray," says Marissa Antonio, of Dededo, a village near Andersen Air Force Base, which was threatened by Pyongyang. "I am a bit scared," she adds. "I try not to think about it, but I got to be prepared." Last week, North Korea moved a mid-range missile to its east coast. The missile was designed to be capable of reaching Guam, a U.S. territory with military bases. April 15 is a looming date because it is the 101st birthday of North Korea's deceased founder, Kim Il Sung. He is the grandfather of North Korea's current leader, Kim Jong Un."
