SUPERCENTENARIANS: WHY 110 IS THE NEW 100

A global team of demographers has identified at least 600 individuals
who have reached the age of 110 and earned the title of
"supercentenarians." Of these 600, 20 were more than 115 years old.

More than half (341) of the supercentenarians discovered are in the
United States, where women in the cohort outnumbered men by nearly 10
to 1. (These numbers may have been a factor of better record keeping in
the United States compared with other countries, the researchers note.)

The work, coordinated by the Max Planck Institute for Demographic
Research in Germany, aims to create a database that would provide a
reliable, international record of scientifically verified data on human
longevity.

The effort may yield important clues about why and how some individuals
are able to live such a long time, some even surviving major surgery in
their 110s. For instance, as the U.S. example illustrates, being born
female has its advantages for longevity, whereas socioeconomic
differences and the longevity of one's ancestors seem to have little
impact on the likelihood of supercentenarianism.

The researchers observed that many of the supercentenarians had been
able to avoid dementia. This suggests that efforts to prevent,
diagnose, and treat Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia may
also contribute to longevity.

SYNTHETIC ANTIBODIES FIGHT BEE STINGS

Synthetically produced antibodies injected into mice have successfully
blocked bee venom, report researchers at the University of California,
Irvine.

The "plastic antibodies" are tiny particles created through molecular
imprinting and designed to match and encase the melittin peptide in bee
venom that causes cells to rupture, leading to organ failure and death.

"Never before have synthetic antibodies been shown to effectively
function in the bloodstream of living animals," says UCI chemistry
professor Kenneth Shea. "This technique could be utilized to make
plastic nanoparticles designed to fight more lethal toxins and
pathogens."

'US soccer hero Donovan has a love child'

'US soccer hero Donovan has a love child'
The famed U.S. soccer star Landon Donovan, 28, copped a love child with a woman in England, although the news is not a shock to him or his estranged wife Bianca Kajlich, an American actress, 33.

"I was informed of the possibility during the World Cup," acknowledged the Los Angeles Galaxy player in an interview with Sports Illustrated, an American sports magazine, June 28. "If I need to take responsibility, then I will provide appropriate support," he said, but refrained from further comments.

Donovan and Kajlich separated for unknown reasons in 2009 after three years of marriage, although the split was said to be amicable. The divorce has never been finalized, and the pair has maintained consistent contact, even sharing custody of their pets, according to news reports.

The fans' talk of the couple's reconcilement was especially renewed when Donovan blew a kiss to the camera and said, "Hi, Bianca," after scoring a last-minute tie-breaking goal in the U.S. match against Algeria, June 24. The 1-0 score in the game ensured the U.S. entry in the best 16 match.

The news of a love child broke after the U.S. was eliminated from the World Cup tournament, June 28, when a woman in Britain anonymously revealed that Donovan is the father of her soon-to-be-born baby.

Early this year, Donovan went on loan to Everton in Liverpool, England for the Premier League, and if the affair took place during this period, the woman would be about four months along in her pregnancy.

US Magazine reports that Kajlich has been previously informed of the situation by Donovan. Kajlich, who stars on the television show Rules of Engagement, "isn't angry or blindsided by this," according to the magazine. Rather, she is "extremely supportive of Donovan," it said.

Tevez is a singer?

Tevez is a singer?
Argentine football star Carlos Tevez, 26, forward of Manchester City FC, has been actually a singer with three albums.

Tevez formed a band, Piola Vago, with his younger brother. Tevez also proposed to famous group 'Oasis' that if they teach Tevez music, he would teach them Latin dance.

"I play as Piola Vago when I want to forget about soccer and take a rest with my brother. I wish the famous Argentine band Oasis would teach me music," he said.

"It was surprising that Tevez has such a side. He dances better than I thought," said a netizen.

Tevez is a close friend with Park Ji-sung, 29, captain of the Korean national team for the South Africa World Cup this year, as they played together in Manchester United in 2007-09.

Ballerina speaks on prestigious award

Ballerina speaks on prestigious award
Every girl dreams of being a ballerina when they’re young, twirling and leaping in skirts of lace and satin. For Chae Ji-young that dream came true.

The 18-year-old won the gold medal at the junior women’s segment of the USA 2010 International Ballet Competition in Jacksonville, Mississippi, last Friday, the first Korean to have ever done so at the world-renowned event.

“I never thought I would ever receive a prize such as this,” Chae told Yonhap News Agency, Monday. “It feels really great.

Even though I still have a lot to learn, I will take this as a sign that I need to continue to do my best.” The Korean ballerina began her dance education at the age of 7, when she was inspired by the Gala Show, performed by the Korea National Ballet at the National Theater of Korea, with her father. She began entering competitions by the time she was in elementary school and her talents quickly drew her to overseas as well as domestic events.

Her first round in the competition saw a paired piece with Kim Ki-min, 17, for “Fire of Paris,” which earned them an award for best junior couple. Round two was a modern “Paganini,” while three was: “Diana and Actaeon.” “I was very happy because as the performance ended and I came out, I ran into members of the audience who all said, ‘You were magnificent,’ ‘Really awesome,’ and ‘I was happy to get to see the performance.”’ The competition, first established in 1964 in Bulgaria, is now among the most prestigious of ballet events. It is held every four years in Mississippi, though it used to rotate through partner cities, such as New York, Helsinki and Shanghai.

The young dancer is a fellow student with Kim at the Korea National University of Arts and has previously won silver and bronze awards from Japan’s Hokuoka Competition and first place in the Italia Roma International.

Prospects only look brighter in this ballerina’s future. “I haven’t thought about which foreign or domestic ballet company I’d like to go to.” Chae said. “Since I’m still a student, for now I need to graduate.”
