Man rushes at Rupert Murdoch in hearing, Jul 19, 2011

LONDON (AP) — A protester splattered Rupert Murdoch with white foam on Tuesday, interrupting a dramatic hearing in which the media baron told British lawmakers he was not responsible for a phone hacking scandal that has rocked his global empire.
Murdoch appeared by turns vague, truculent, sharp and concise as he spoke alongside his son and deputy, James, calling the parliamentary inquiry "the most humble day of my career" but refusing to take personal blame for the crisis that has swept from a tabloid newspaper through the top levels of Britain's police and even to the prime minister's office.
Murdoch, 80, said he was "shocked, appalled and ashamed" at the hacking of the phone of a murdered schoolgirl by his now-shuttered News of the World tabloid.
But he quibbled with a suggestion that criminality had been endemic at the tabloid and said he had seen no evidence that victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attack and their relatives were targeted by any of his papers.

Facebook Seems Worried About Google+. Should it Be?

In a recent article, we looked at some obstacles Google+ would have to overcome. We also looked at how Google+ might maim (as opposed to kill) Twitter. I don’t think Twitter’s going to die anytime soon, but Google+ is already taking away a lot of people’s Twitter time. Something’s got to give somewhere, and more people simply just have more invested in Facebook – their network of real friends, their photos, games, etc. Robert Scoble says Google+ is already making Twitter more boring. Could it do the same to Facebook?
Can Google+ win over Facebook users? Tell us what you think.

Migrating from Facebook to Google+
Google Developer advocate Don Dodge recently ran down a step-by-step process for getting your Facebook Friends on Google+. Of course you could simply send them invites. We recently looked at how to transfer your photos from Facebook to Google+. Speaking of photos, the Google+ mobile app makes it very easy to use Google as your photo album of choice, with the instant upload feature.
Games are a huge part of Facebook’s appeal for many users. Both Facebook and Google know the significance of gaming to social network success. In a new addendum to Zynga’s (makers of Farmville, Cityville, Mafia Wars, etc.) S-1 filing, it was revealed that games built with any Facebook integration or data must be exclusive to Facebook for the duration of the two companies’ five-year agreement. At SXSW in March, Manny Anekal, Zynga’s Director of Brand Advertising, said that 1 in 5 Americans play Zynga games. I can’t confirm this, but…wow.
Meanwhile, Google has been placing a fair amount of emphasis on gaming itself. Last summer, it acquired social gaming companies Slide and SocialDeck. Chrome users may have noticed some heavy promotion of Angry Birds as well. In fact, there are plenty of other non-Google games making their way into Google’s Chrome web store, not to mention the Android market. Google controls the Chrome and Android platforms obviously, so who’s to say where this could lead in Google+-related gaming. Remember Google+ is largely about the ID element – who you’re signed into these games

"Chelation Therapy": Heart Disease Community - Support Group, Jul 2011

Joe Piscatella posted:
Recently I've had a number of questions about chelation therapy, which claims to clean out blocked arteries without surgery. The process involves introducing an amino acid, called EDTA, into the veins. Normally used to treat mercury or lead poisoning, since it causes heavy metals to be excreted in the urine, EDTA is believed to help reduce damage to artery walls and remove calcium, a key component of plaque, from the bloodstread. A single treatment takes about two hours and costs $50 to $100 (usually not covered by insurance.) A normal treatment schedule calls for 30 treatments. About 2,500 doctors in the U.S. offer chelation therapy.

When I asked the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology about this therapy, they responded that they do not recognize chelation as an effective method for treating heart disease; in fact. they advise against it, citing possible adverse effects such as kidney damage, decreased bone density and heart rhythm irregularities. A recent study conducted by doctors at the University of Calgary found no benefit from chelation therapy. Says Dr. George Wise, one of the authors of the study, 'My advice to patients is there is no evidence that chelation therapy works.'"

High-Sodium, Low-Potassium Diet Linked to Heart Risk

Disease From High-Sodium, Low-Potassium Intake

Banana
July 11, 2011 -- A diet high in sodium and low in potassium increases the risk of death from heart disease and other causes, according to a new study.
"Americans who eat a diet high in sodium and low in potassium have a 50% increased risk of death from any cause and about about twice the risk of death from heart disease," says researcher Elena V. Kuklina, MD, PhD. She is a nutritional epidemiologist with the CDC division for heart disease andstroke prevention.
Morton Satin, vice president of science and research for the Salt Institute, disagrees with the study. "It's highly flawed and reveals more of this dogmatic anti-salt agenda."
Research about sodium and heart disease has produced conflicting results. Studies have shown that high sodium intake or low potassium intake is linked with a higher risk for high blood pressure, the researchers write. The link is stronger for potassium.
However, the research about a link between intake of sodium and potassium and getting or dying from cardiovascular disease has been less consistent.
The researchers decided to focus on the sodium-potassium ratio. Recent research has suggested the ratio may be more important in explaining the risk for high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease than either alone.
The study is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

Things You Should Never Do to Lose Weight

By Kathleen M. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD
WebMD Expert Column
Fighting the battle of the bulge can range from following a sensible diet to benign ill-guided efforts to extreme, downright risky behaviors. Some behaviors are unlikely to cause harm because they cannot be sustained long enough to do damage but other dieting tactics can be downright risky and cause serious health consequences.

“People get so focused on weight loss they are willing to do unproven and potentially dangerous things that can backfire and cause serious health problems,” says Michelle May, MD, an Arizona-based weight management doctor.

Extreme dieting can also lead down the path and increase the risk of developing eating disorders, says eating disorder specialist Connie Diekman, MEd, RD.

Skipping meals, weighing in every day, eliminating food groups, or relying on supplements to fix a junk food diet are not among the best ways to lose weight, but these behaviors are unlikely to cause significant health consequences.

WebMD consulted diet experts to identify the most dangerous efforts you should NOT use to lose weight."
