BOSTON hospitals scramble to care for wounded after blasts, Apr 16, 2013
"BOSTON - At Boston Children's Hospital, the list of the wounded included a 2-year-old boy with a head injury, a 9-year-old girl with leg trauma and six other children under the age of 15. Over at Massachusetts General Hospital, which was caring for 29 victims, injuries ranged from cuts and bruises to serious shrapnel wounds. Trauma surgeons said they had performed several amputations by mid-evening on Monday. In total, three people lost their lives and more than 100 were injured when two bombs ripped through the crowd on a resplendent Monday afternoon at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, creating a gruesome scene of panic and carnage. The explosions, which authorities said were 50 to 100 yards (45 to 90 metres) apart, knocked runners at one of the nation's most storied long-distance races off their feet and sent dozens of gravely injured spectators to the city's emergency rooms."

ASTEROID tracking infrared sensor passes key test, Apr 16, 2013
"Washington: A NASA funded infrared sensor that could improve the agency's future detecting and tracking of asteroids and comets has passed a critical design test. The test assessed performance of the Near Earth Object Camera (NEOCam) in an environment that mimicked the temperatures and pressures of deep space. NEOCam is the cornerstone instrument for a proposed new space-based asteroid-hunting telescope. The sensor could be a vital component to inform plans for the agency's recently announced initiative to develop the first-ever mission to identify, capture and relocate an asteroid closer to Earth for future exploration by astronauts. INDEPENDENT - The two sides in Syria’s civil war are talking, Apr 15, 2013
"A new video uploaded by a group of rebel fighters in Darayya appears to show a dialogue of sorts between the Syrian regime and the opposition. While not quite the high-level discussions needed to bring an end to the fighting, the exchange nevertheless gives a fascinating insight into the thinking of both sides. The scene takes place on the front lines in Darayya – a suburb of Damascus that has seen some of the heaviest fighting in the country. A correspondent working for Russia Today recently referred to it as “Syria’s Stalingrad”. The camera follows a rebel fighter as he makes his way through a gutted, sand-bagged building occupied by both government soldiers and rebel fighters. No man’s land is a staircase, and like in many other contested areas across the country the gap between the two sides is small enough so that they can shout to each other. A conversation is underway between one of the rebels and what appears to be a government soldier, who is out of shot."
