TIMES LIVE - Meteoroid impact triggers bright flash on the moon, May 18, 2013

"An automated telescope monitoring the moon has captured images of a 40 kg rock slamming into the lunar surface, creating a bright flash of light, Nasa scientists said. The explosion on Friday, March 17 was the biggest seen since Nasa began watching the moon for meteoroid impacts about eight years ago. So far, more than 300 strikes have been recorded. “It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we’ve ever seen before,” Bill Cooke, with NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Centre in Huntsville, Alabama, said in a statement. A Nasa satellite orbiting the moon is now on a hunt for the newly formed crater, which scientists estimate could be as wide as 20 meters."

Aimee Copeland, 25, is returning from Hilliard, Ohio, where she was fitted with a pair of "bionic" hands with 24 programmable functions that will improve her dexterity, her father, Andy, told the Associated Press. Copeland, of Snellville, contracted a rare infection called necrotizing fasciitis in May 2012 after falling from a zip line and gashing her leg. ASTEROID 1998 QE2 To Give Earth A Close Shave On May 31 (VIDEO), May 18, 2013

"A gigantic asteroid will fly by our planet at the end of this month, making its closest approach for at least the next two centuries on May 31. But, don't worry, it won't get closer than about 3.6 million miles, which is around 15 times the distance between Earth and the moon. Astronomers plan to use radar telescopes to get a good look at the space rock, named Asteroid 1998 QE2, between May 30 and June 9. "Asteroid 1998 QE2 will be an outstanding radar imaging target at Goldstone and Arecibo [observatories] and we expect to obtain a series of high-resolution images that could reveal a wealth of surface features," radar astronomer Lance Benner, the principal investigator for the Goldstone radar observations from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a written statement."

REUTERS - Turkey's Erdogan says U.N. must decide on any Syria no-fly zone, May 18, 2013

"(Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday it would be up to the U.N. Security Council to decide whether to establish a no-fly zone inside Syria and said he backed the involvement of Russia and China in planned peace talks. Speaking at the Brookings Institution in Washington a day after discussing Syria with President Barack Obama, Erdogan said a no-fly zone could be discussed at a planned international conference on Syria backed by Washington and Moscow. "It is not a decision that could be taken between the United States and Turkey. It is something that would have to come through the U.N. Security Council," Erdogan said. "We are in the process of putting together a conference in Geneva ... If that process decides on such a zone, as Turkey we would also do whatever is necessary," he said."
