BBC News - Merkel warns Germans of tough economic times ahead, Dec 31, 2012
"Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that the German economic climate in 2013 will be "even more difficult". In her new year message, she also cautioned that the eurozone debt crisis was far from over. However, she did say that reforms designed to address the roots of the problem were beginning to bear fruit. Her comments appeared to contradict German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who said last week that the worst of the crisis was over. In a taped interview to be broadcast later on Monday, Mrs Merkel urged Germans to be more patient."
BBC News - Libya rediscovers its hidden talent, Dec 31, 2012
"For decades, Libya appeared to be starved of talent. The entertainment industry is still virtually non-existent. But since the uprising that toppled the only man allowed to be famous in the country - Col Muammar Gaddafi - Libyans are leaving nothing to chance. In a small music shop tucked in a street in central Tripoli, the owner is busily tuning a guitar. Rows upon rows of instruments line the store's walls. The gleaming, colourful electric guitars are in a league of their own against other instruments, including the traditional darbuka (drum). This is where a heavy metal band that recently re-grouped meets three times a week after sunset."

BBC News - Central African Republic crisis: Bozize promises coalition, Dec 30, 2012
"Central African Republic leader Francois Bozize has said he is ready to form a national unity government with rebels, as they continue their advance towards the capital Bangui. Mr Bozize's remarks came after a meeting with African Union chairman Thomas Boni Yayi. He said he would hold peace talks with rebels in Gabon, and would step down when his term ended in 2016. The rebels told the BBC they would consider the president's offer. They had pledged to depose Mr Bozize unless he negotiated with them, but have also said that it is not their aim to enter government themselves. Government troops have reportedly pulled back to Damara, 75km from the capital, in the face of a rebel advance, but rebel spokesman Eric Massi told the BBC they would not march on Bangui itself before seeing the outcome of the talks. BBC Africa editor Mary Harper says they are insisting that they do not want to take over, but rather are seeking a peaceful democratic transition."
