MORE THREATS TO GULF OF MEXICO
Leaking oil isn't the only threat to the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding
coastal communities. Rising sea levels also pose dangers to wetlands
and habitats of commercially important fish and wildlife, according to
the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
A new research project led by Scott Hagen of the University of Central
Florida will develop computer models to predict sea level rises and the
impacts of storms along the Gulf Coast. The study area will range from
Mississippi to the Florida panhandle, a stretch chosen for its
relatively pristine ecosystems and existing monitoring infrastructure,
making it an ideal "sentinel site" for climate change impacts.
The study will produce models that can help ecosystem and natural
resource managers in their planning for potential sea level rises. The
model may also help oil spill responders understand the long-term
effects of the oil on the Gulf's ecosystems.

26 August 2010: It was exactly hundred years ago that one of the great servants of humanity, Blessed Mother Teresa was born in a foreign land and later joining a religious order came to India and eventually became an Indian citizen. Witnessing the miserable condition of the poor, sick, destitute and neglected and lonely, Mother Teresa found her second calling in helping and caring for these unfortunate people.
Mother Teresa, by her unconditional service to the destitute and dying earned the epithet as the ‘Saint of the Gutters’ and following her death in September 1997, was beatified by Pope John Paul II as ‘Blessed Mother Teresa’ in 2003. On the occasion of the centenary of her birth, it would be appropriate to review briefly her life and work that has inspired a large number of people all over the world.

NASA - Pulverized Planet Dust May Lie Around Double Stars
PASADENA, Calif. -- Tight double-star systems might not be the best places for life to spring up, according to a new study using data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. The infrared observatory spotted a surprisingly large amount of dust around three mature, close-orbiting star pairs. Where did the dust come from? Astronomers say it might be the aftermath of tremendous planetary collisions.

More than 1,000 Britons were 'exported' for trial last year
More than 1,000 people in Britain were arrested and sent abroad on the orders of European prosecutors last year, according to figures released yesterday. They show that the use of the controversial European Arrest Warrant has shot up by 50 per cent in a year.
The warrants - introduced in this country six years ago - are meant to make it harder for criminals to hide from justice by fleeing from one European country to another. They mean that a suspect arrested in Britain who is wanted in another European country has no right to ask a British judge to test the merits of the case against them. But a series of worrying cases has led to concern that the warrants can lead to injustice for people wanted on spurious charges in countries with less sophisticated justice systems.
