More than 1,000 people in Britain were arrested and sent abroad on the orders of European prosecutors last year, according to figures released yesterday. They show that the use of the controversial European Arrest Warrant has shot up by 50 per cent in a year.
The warrants - introduced in this country six years ago - are meant to make it harder for criminals to hide from justice by fleeing from one European country to another. They mean that a suspect arrested in Britain who is wanted in another European country has no right to ask a British judge to test the merits of the case against them. But a series of worrying cases has led to concern that the warrants can lead to injustice for people wanted on spurious charges in countries with less sophisticated justice systems.
