BBC News - Merkel warns Germans of tough economic times ahead, Dec 31, 2012

Angela Merkel delivers her new year message in a TV message. 30 Dec 2012"Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that the German economic climate in 2013 will be "even more difficult". In her new year message, she also cautioned that the eurozone debt crisis was far from over. However, she did say that reforms designed to address the roots of the problem were beginning to bear fruit. Her comments appeared to contradict German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble who said last week that the worst of the crisis was over. In a taped interview to be broadcast later on Monday, Mrs Merkel urged Germans to be more patient."Products and Services

BBC News - Libya rediscovers its hidden talent, Dec 31, 2012

"For decades, Libya appeared to be starved of talent. The entertainment industry is still virtually non-existent. But since the uprising that toppled the only man allowed to be famous in the country - Col Muammar Gaddafi - Libyans are leaving nothing to chance. In a small music shop tucked in a street in central Tripoli, the owner is busily tuning a guitar. Rows upon rows of instruments line the store's walls. The gleaming, colourful electric guitars are in a league of their own against other instruments, including the traditional darbuka (drum). This is where a heavy metal band that recently re-grouped meets three times a week after sunset."

BBC News - Delhi gang-rape victim's funeral held, Dec 30, 2012

Ambulance bearing the body of Indian gang-rape victim, Delhi (30 Dec)
"A young Indian woman who died after being gang-raped on a bus has been cremated in the capital, Delhi. The ceremony came hours after a plane chartered by the Indian government brought her body back to the city. The 23-year-old medical student died in a Singapore hospital where she was being treated for severe injuries. The attack sparked two weeks of protests about gender attitudes in India, and calls for changes to laws on rape and violence against women. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the head of India's governing Congress party Sonia Gandhi were at the airport when the plane landed at about 04:15 (22:45 GMT). A convoy carrying a gold-coloured coffin and the victim's parents then drove towards the Janakpuri district of Delhi where she had been living."

BBC News - Central African Republic crisis: Bozize promises coalition, Dec 30, 2012

"Central African Republic leader Francois Bozize has said he is ready to form a national unity government with rebels, as they continue their advance towards the capital Bangui. Mr Bozize's remarks came after a meeting with African Union chairman Thomas Boni Yayi. He said he would hold peace talks with rebels in Gabon, and would step down when his term ended in 2016. The rebels told the BBC they would consider the president's offer. They had pledged to depose Mr Bozize unless he negotiated with them, but have also said that it is not their aim to enter government themselves. Government troops have reportedly pulled back to Damara, 75km from the capital, in the face of a rebel advance, but rebel spokesman Eric Massi told the BBC they would not march on Bangui itself before seeing the outcome of the talks. BBC Africa editor Mary Harper says they are insisting that they do not want to take over, but rather are seeking a peaceful democratic transition."Products and Services

BBC News - Blast in southwest Pakistan kills Shia pilgrims, Dec 30, 2012

"At least 19 Shia Muslim pilgrims have been killed by a bomb attack on a bus convoy in southwest Pakistan, local officials say. More than 20 people have been injured in the incident in the Mastung district of Baluchistan province. Pakistan has experienced worsening sectarian violence in recent years. Last month 23 Shia Muslims were killed by a bomb in the city of Rawalpindi. No group has yet said it carried out Sunday's bombing. Initial reports said it had been detonated by remote control but a government official said it had been a suicide attack. Officials said that some of those injured were in a critical condition and that the death toll may rise. The bus convoy had reportedly been on their way to neighbouring Iran, a Shia-majority country and popular pilgrimage destination."

BBC News - Obama ups pressure on Republicans over 'fiscal cliff', Dec 30, 2012

"US President Barack Obama has increased pressure on Republicans to accept a deal aimed at stopping the country going over a "fiscal cliff". He blamed them for the deadlock, saying their "overriding theme" was protecting tax breaks for the rich. But efforts to reach a deal suffered a setback as Senate leaders missed their own deadline to reach a compromise. Failure to resolve the crisis by 31 December will mean steep spending cuts and tax rises. This has raised fears that reduced consumer spending could trigger a US economic slowdown, which in turn could damage the global economy."
