Business Line- Milky Way’s neighbour galaxy just 163,000 light-years away, Mar 07, 2013

Large Magellanic Cloud: It is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, that floats in space, in a long and slow dance around our galaxy. Vast clouds of gas within it slowly collapse to form new stars. In turn, these light up the gas clouds in a riot of colors, visible in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. (Image Credit: ESA/NASA/Hubble)
"LONDON, MAR 7:   Astronomers have for the first time accurately measured the distance to one of the Milky Way’s neighbouring galaxy — and it is just 163,000 light-years away. Scientists using telescopes at European Southern Observatory’s La Silla Observatory in Chile as well as others around the globe found the dwarf galaxy nearby called the Large Magellanic Cloud, which lies 163,000 light-years away. The new measurement improves scientists’ knowledge of the rate of expansion of the Universe — the Hubble Constant — and is a crucial step towards understanding the nature of the mysterious dark energy that is causing the expansion to accelerate."
