Kepler Problem: Planet-Hunting Space Telescope Ailing, NASA Says, May 02, 2013

Nasa Kepler
"By: Mike Wall Published: 05/01/2013 10:01 AM EDT on SPACE.com Health issues are jeopardizing the planet-hunting work of NASA's prolific Kepler space telescope, which has identified more than 2,700 potential alien worlds to date. One of Kepler's reaction wheels — devices that maintain the observatory's position in space — remains balky despite mitigation attempts. The mission team now regards the problem as unsolvable and is considering what the telescope can do after the wheel fails. "While the wheel may still continue to operate for some time yet, the engineering team has now turned its attention to the development of contingency actions should the wheel fail sooner, rather than later," Kepler mission manager Roger Hunter, of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., wrote in an update Monday (April 29). Federico Lombardi said Tuesday April 30, 2013 that retired Pope Benedict XVI is moving into his new retirement home in the Vatican gardens on Thursday. "VATICAN CITY - Benedict XVI has returned to the Vatican for the first time since he resigned Feb. 28 and met with successor Pope Francis. The Vatican said Francis greeted Benedict on Thursday at his new retirement home, a converted monastery on the edge of the Vatican gardens, and the two then prayed together in the adjoining chapel. Benedict's return to the Vatican signals an unprecedented era with a retired pontiff living alongside a reigning one. It is the second meeting between the two since Francis was elected pope March 13. Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI flew by helicopter from the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, where he has lived since Feb. 28, when he became the first pope in 600 years to step down."

Venezuela: Respect Free Speech!
"Since the slight victory of Nicolas Maduro in the recent Venezuelan elections, the country has erupted in horrifically violent protests. Maduro's opponent challenged the results, but the request for a recount by the National Electoral Council was denied.  Maduro said he would respond with an "iron fist", not allowing his opposition to hold a rally. He said that the media could choose between fascism or the government, and forced the media to play footage of him opening hospitals."
