"Editor's Note
Foodborne diseases in the United States account for an estimated 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3000 deaths annually.[1,2]
In an effort to ensure the safety of the US food supply, President Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) on January 4, 2011. The Act aims to shift the focus of federal regulation from response to prevention of food contamination. The FSMA addresses the foods that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides oversight of, and is groundbreaking because it is the first major legislation associated with the FDA's food-safety arm since 1938.[3]"
