What does Vladimir Putin fear? Mar 16, 2022

Putin has a stoic personality, and fear doesn't occur to him often. He's probably not even afraid of assassination attempts. In Putin's mind, he has a mission to restore Russia to greatness and his fate has joined Russia's fate.

The only time I remember Putin shedding a tear was during a post-election rally earlier this year in Moscow, after he won a record 77% of the vote to start his fourth term as president. That says a lot about his feelings and priorities. Putin is certainly not a saint of any kind, but he truly believes he is accomplishing something great for his country.

This means that Putin's biggest fear is failure. He fears he will go down in history like many of his predecessors, who enjoyed popular support while in power, only to be harshly judged by future generations of Russians. He wants to be the first Russian leader in many decades to be remembered fondly and whose name will be among the country's great historical figures. That is why he seeks to go further, why he has taken control of Crimea, why he is resisting pressure from the United States, why he is building the Russian army, which is working practically non-stop.

Only time will tell if Putin's mission will be a success or if fear of him will come true.
