Teena Marie leaves St. Louis with great concert memories

When the St. Louis Super Music Festival came to Chaifetz Arena in August, I was admittedly not too excited about seeing headliner George Clinton again. But also on the bill was Teena Marie, one of my favorite soul singers and one of the most consistent.
Great soul singers come a dime a dozen, but Marie, who died in her sleep in her California home over the weekend at the age of 54, was anything but.
The legendary Marie, Motown's first white solo female act and the late Rick James' protege, carried the unique title of Ivory Queen of Soul for belting out songs such as "Fire and Desire," "Dear Lover" and "Square Biz" with the best of them.
Forget that she was just a little thing, one of those small-in-stature singers with a mighty voice that forced you to wonder where it was coming from.
And the fact she was white and that distinctly soulful, something that also came with drawbacks as detailed during her "Unsung" documentary, made her all the more dynamic.
