SEATTLEPI - NASA: Sun is bursting with strongest solar flares of 2013, May 14, 2013

These pictures from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory show the three X-class flares that the sun emitted in under 24 hours on May 12-13, 2013. The images show light with a wavelength of 131 angstroms, which is particularly good for showing solar flares and is typically colorized in teal.

"Don’t freak out, they’ve been expecting this sort of thing, but the sun is bursting with solar flares, and they’re pretty big. NASA reported Tuesday morning that the sun had emitted a third X-class (or the “most intense flares”) in the past 24 hours. The third solar flare was an X3.2 (or, 3.2 times bigger than an X1) and shot out a little after 9 p.m Monday."
