Breast Implants, MRI, and the FDA: How to Advise Our Patients?

Hello, I'm Andrew Kaunitz, Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, Florida. Today I'd like to discuss: 'Breast Implants, MRI, and the FDA: How Should We Advise Our Patients?'

On June 22 on NBC's Nightly News With Brian Williams, NBC's Chief Medical Expert Dr. Nancy Snyderman reviewed a new US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) report in regard to silicone gel-filled breast implants. The report indicated that women should undergo surveillance with a breast MRI 3 years after implantation, and subsequently every 2 years.[1] In researching this issue, I was surprised to find that the FDA has recommended surveillance MRI for silent rupture since 2006, when silicone implants came back on the market for cosmetic augmentation."
