The idea of a fixed term for a Prime Minister, the concept to recall of Members of Parliament and the concept of referenda will be discussed at the regional parliamentary conference which will be held in Trinidad between July 23 to 30.
Under the theme "Modernisation of Caribbean Parliaments: Forging our own identity", an estimated 60 delegates representing the Parliaments of the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic region will gather at the Parliament Chamber and the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port of Spain for discussions.
The role of Women Parliamentarians in the modern Caribbean Parliament will also be examined.
Other topics include: "Parliament as an autonomous body—separation from the Executive branch of Government; Providing a platform for innovative leadership within the parliamentary system; Making the legislature more accessible and interactive for voters; Effective measures of ensuring accountability and transparency in government and the most effective use of a committee system in small legislatures.
Among the delegates who would be attending the conference are the Chief Minister of Anguilla, Hubert Hughes, Speakers of the Parliaments of Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Jamaica and Montserrat, former Premiere and Deputy Speaker of Bermuda Dame Jennifer Smith, Ministers and Members of Parliament from the Caribbean.
