Police: 8 killed in Thailand bombings, Jul 02, 2010

July 2, 2010
ASSOCIATED PRESS
PATTANI, Thailand — Suspected Muslim insurgents detonated roadside bombs that killed eight people, including one civilian, in two separate attacks in Thailand’s restive south, police said Friday.
A bomb explosion in Yala province on Friday killed three soldiers in a pickup truck who were sent to fix a water pipe in a village in Yaha district, said police Col. Sawas Tiawirat. On Thursday evening, suspected insurgents detonated a bomb and then shot at security forces on a patrol in Narathiwat province, killing a soldier, two security rangers, a village security guard and a village official, said police Capt. Pairat Kiatcharoensiri.
The suspects stole four rifles before fleeing in the Rue So district of Narathiwat, he said.
More than 4,000 people have been killed in Thailand’s three southernmost provinces since an Islamist insurgency erupted in 2004.
Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala provinces are the only Muslim-majority areas in the predominantly Buddhist country. Muslims there have long complained of discrimination by the central government.
The southern insurgents have made no public pronouncements, but are thought to be fighting for an independent Muslim state. Their attacks target symbols of the state, including soldiers, government-run offices and businesses.

Mexico nabs gang leader in US consulate killing

July 2, 2010

MEXICO CITY — A drug gang leader says he ordered the killing of a U.S. consulate worker because she gave visas to a rival gang in the border city of Ciudad Juarez, federal police said Friday.
Jesus Ernesto Chavez, whose arrest was announced on Friday, leads a band of hit men for a street gang tied to the Juarez cartel, said Ramon Pequeno, the head of anti-narcotics for the Federal Police.Pequeno said Chavez ordered the March 13 attack that killed U.S. consulate employee Lesley Enriquez and her husband as they drove in the violent border city, and he said Chavez told police that Enriquez was targeted because she gave visas to a rival gang.
A U.S. Embassy official said there would no immediate comment on the allegation.
Enriquez, who was four months pregnant, and her husband, Arthur H. Redelfs, were killed when gunmen opened fire on their sport utility vehicle after they left a birthday party. Their 7-month-old daughter was found wailing in the back of the vehicle.
Jorge Alberto Salcido, the husband of a Mexican employee of the consulate, also was killed by gunmen after leaving the same event in a separate vehicle.
Chavez told police that gunmen opened fire on Salcido because the two cars were the same color and the hit men didn’t know which one Enriquez was in, Pequeno said.
Pequeno said Chavez belongs to Barrio Azteca, a gang that works for the Juarez cartel on both sides of the border.
The Juarez cartel’s turf war against the Sinaloa cartel has made Ciudad Juarez one of the deadliest cities in the world. More than 2,600 people were killed last year in the city of 1.3 million people across the border from El Paso, Texas.

The president has just given his first speech on immigration since taking office. Has anything changed?

Best Opinion:  L.A. Times, National Review, Firedoglake
In his first major speech on immigration — a policy priority that has seemingly come "out of nowhere" in the past week — President Obama called for comprehensive reform legislation, including a pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants. "The question now is, do we have the courage and political will to pass a bill through Congress and finally get it done," the president said, speaking at American University on Thursday. He decried Arizona's yet-to-be-enacted immigration law as "ill-conceived," and called for "one clear national standard." Clearly, this "puts Republicans in a tough spot," say Anna Gorman and Peter Nicholas in the Los Angeles Times. They really can't "afford to write off a Latino community" ahead of the November midterms. But the president didn't offer any specifics, says Mark Krikorian at National Review. "The speech was just one more effort at stringing the open-borders folks along while trying to blame the Republicans for not helping the Democrats pass an amnesty." Below, highlights from Obama's address:

Becoming a new US president Barack Obama proclaimed "reset" in relations with Russia for the achievement of common goals of global security. As a result prioritized Afghan and Iranian issues shifted the geopolitical struggle for South Caucasus to the background. But it seems Georgia is unhappy with the supporting roles. From time to time Tbilisi calls attention of the White House. Now Georgians set hopes on Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's tour of Caucasus and her possible approval of reconciliation strategy with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. What will Washington say to Tbilisi strategists?

FBI office to be opened in Georgia

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the USA will open an office in Georgia, the VZGLYAD correspondent states citing to Alia.
FBR delegation will visit Georgia for preparation work.
In May Robert Mueller, the FBI director, visited Georgia. The media say the issue of opening an office was decided that time.
According to the newspaper, a number of changes is planned in the special services of Georgia. The foreign intelligence service will receive more authority and will be the Intelligence Service of Georgia, and the military counter-espionage of the Ministry of Defense will be cooperating with a new service.

Georgia flying to arms

 Georgia flying to arms
Who said the East was tricky? Perhaps, that is true in respect of personalities but if we take the category of State there is no easier task than tracking down its actions and nearest steps. Georgia is no exception and its behavior in the international arena bodes no good. The minds of Georgia's current politicians seem to be preoccupied with the number-one idea of having revenge, no matter the price or means.
