Are we alone in the universe?

These days, there are fewer places left to carry out the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). That’s why I’m proud to say that the Planetary Society continues to provide vital support for two SETI programs dedicated to answering the question that fascinates us all.

In Boston, Massachusetts, Paul Horowitz and his Harvard Optical SETI team continue an all-sky survey at optical wavelengths using a 72-inch telescope and impressive electronics.

Now, to screen out the distorting effects of radiation, the team is developing a new motherboard and ten “daughter” boards to provide an ultrafast multichannel flash analog digital converter.

And far south in Argentina at Southern SETI, the Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomia has two 30-meter dishes that can point at the galactic center, the densest star fields in our galaxy.

Their exciting new search strategy is based on natural masers (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) that amplify certain frequencies passing through them from between tens of millions to hundreds of billions of times. Masers might direct our way a crisp signal from another solar system that could otherwise be dissipated or absorbed by interstellar particles.

Here is where we come in: we must raise at least $36,000 to continue our SETI searches that cover the sky from both hemispheres. I need your immediate and most generous donation.
Your donation now to the Planetary Society will help complete the upgrade of Harvard’s Optical SETI system, including testing the new electronics and purchasing upgrades for the telescope. You’ll also be helping to fund the maintenance and operations of the only SETI all-sky survey in existence!
I believe that one day, a SETI scientist will find that elusive signal. And our world will change forever. Will you please be part of the search? We need your help now to fund our SETI programs.

Why Oil Prices Won't Stay Down For Long - Money Morning

BY KEITH FITZ-GERALD, Chief Investment Strategist, Money Morning
Oil prices, like stocks, took a few big hits last week.

West Texas Intermediate crude last week dropped below $80 a barrel before bouncing back up to $87 a barrel this week. Meanwhile, Brent crude fell to a six-month low below $100 a barrel before climbing back to $110 a barrel this week.

To hear the mainstream media tell it, much of the drop is based on the assumption that global growth is waning and oil demand is soon to follow.

The New Abnormal: Permanently Engineered Market Volatility - Money Morning

BY SHAH GILANI, Capital Waves Strategist, Money Morning
If the gut-wrenching market volatility of the past few weeks has made you sick to your stomach , I have some bad news for you: violent volatility is the new normal - or more precisely, the new ab-normal.

After massive market moves last week, the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 419.63 points yesterday (Thursday). And, while t hat may be bad news for average investors, it's something Wall Street wants.

If you're not a day-trader, high-frequency trader, hedge-fund manager, or institutional desk trader, reading this is going to make you mad as hell. But it's something you have to know, understand, and accept if you're going to be a successful investor going forward.

EU takes on Internet giants - News - The Prague Post

EU takes on Internet giantsThe European Union is set for a major confrontation with global Internet giants over plans to give Web users greater control over personal data online.

But is it too late, and is the genie already "out of the bottle," as one tech expert says?

Proposals to make it easier for people to have personal data erased from the Web are at the center of the clash, which pits the EU and privacy-conscious citizens against Internet firms eager to monetize personal data to the greatest extent possible.

Vaccination of Children With Rheumatic Diseases: Abstract and Introduction

Children with rheumatic diseases (RDs) are at greater risk of infection because of their aberrant immunity and frequent use of immunosuppressive drugs. However, the use of vaccinations in such children is debated by many experts who think that the patients' immune response is insufficient to assure protection; some of them are also afraid that vaccines could trigger a persistent autoimmune response and lead to severe clinical problems including a relapse of the RD. This review describes the available data regarding the risks of vaccine administration, and the immunogenicity, efficacy and tolerability of the vaccines usually recommended for children with RDs. The data not only show that the schedule suggested for otherwise healthy children should be followed, but also that pneumococcal and influenza vaccinations should be strongly recommended because of the known risk of severe infections in patients with RD. However, there are areas in which further research is urgently required.

Menopausal Hot Flashes: Are SSRIs a Treatment Option?

Many of our patients are seeking nonhormonal remedies for their hot flashes, and it is important to understand whether SSRI or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) antidepressants are effectively reducing these symptoms. The study I would like to discuss was published earlier this year in JAMA. It was a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trial that was conducted in 205 women.[1] Approximately half of the participants were African American, allowing for a comparison of results by race.

Life-Threatening Pericardial/Myocardial Pathology

Infectious and inflammatory conditions of the pericardium and myocardium may present with occult symptoms or rapid cardiovascular collapse. The large overlap in presentation of pathologic processes makes it difficult to readily distinguish among different root etiologies. A series of clinical cases will hone your diagnostic acumen and ensure you can readily identify, triage, and treat diseases of the pericardium and myocardium. The ultrasound image shown demonstrates a pericardial effusion.

Statins and Risk of Cancer: Abstract and Introduction

Statins are widely prescribed drugs in the United States for the management of dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular event risk reduction. Unsettled scientific debate about the association of statins with cancer continues, with high-profile studies showing conflicting results.
