ASTEROID tracking infrared sensor passes key test, Apr 16, 2013

Asteroid tracking infrared sensor passes key test
"Washington: A NASA funded infrared sensor that could improve the agency's future detecting and tracking of asteroids and comets has passed a critical design test. The test assessed performance of the Near Earth Object Camera (NEOCam) in an environment that mimicked the temperatures and pressures of deep space. NEOCam is the cornerstone instrument for a proposed new space-based asteroid-hunting telescope. The sensor could be a vital component to inform plans for the agency's recently announced initiative to develop the first-ever mission to identify, capture and relocate an asteroid closer to Earth for future exploration by astronauts. Hunting for clues in Boston bombing, Apr 16, 2013

:Hunting for clues in Boston bombing
"BOSTON - Investigators on Tuesday searched for the person or group responsible for planting two bombs at the Boston Marathon finish line that killed three people and wounded more than 100 in the worst bomb attack on U.S. soil since Sept. 11, 2001. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation led a battery of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies on the case, while critically wounded victims of Monday's blasts fought for their lives and others contemplated a new life as amputees. The bombs ripped through the crowd at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, shattering the annual civic celebration on the Patriots' Day state holiday while tens of thousands of people packed the street to cheer on the runners."

INDEPENDENT - The two sides in Syria’s civil war are talking, Apr 15, 2013

syriaphoto 1024x731 The two sides in Syria’s civil war are talking
"A new video uploaded by a group of rebel fighters in Darayya appears to show a dialogue of sorts between the Syrian regime and the opposition. While not quite the high-level discussions needed to bring an end to the fighting, the exchange nevertheless gives a fascinating insight into the thinking of both sides. The scene takes place on the front lines in Darayya – a suburb of Damascus that has seen some of the heaviest fighting in the country. A correspondent working for Russia Today recently referred to it as “Syria’s Stalingrad”. The camera follows a rebel fighter as he makes his way through a gutted, sand-bagged building occupied by both government soldiers and rebel fighters. No man’s land is a staircase, and like in many other contested areas across the country the gap between the two sides is small enough so that they can shout to each other. A conversation is underway between one of the rebels and what appears to be a government soldier, who is out of shot."

FORBES - Anne Frank Teaches Justin Bieber a Lesson, Apr 15, 2013

"There’s a reason the Anne Frank House regularly has the longest lines in Amsterdam; it’s one of the most moving and emotionally-taxing experiences a person can have at a museum. The faces of the people exiting the canalside history lesson are a testament to the impact the place can have. Which is why Justin Bieber‘s Anne Frank House stupidity isn’t just another example of a famous narcissistic teen warbler doing something idiotic in public – he’s a uniquely loathsome narcissistic teen warbler who is now paying for his idiocy with a backlash of epic social media proportions. “Hopefully she would have been a belieber,” he wrote in the guest book before leaving during a visit last week, inspiring outrage and derisive jokes everywhere. In a schadenfreudian way, it’s lovely to watch – even more so because he’s probably right; Anne Frank very well might have had Bieber’s dreamboy face up on her wall next to her photos of Hollywood stars and European royals. (She also almost certainly would have been put off by his cynical manipulation of a young Holocaust victim, so he’d probably get torn off the wall, too.)"
