The queen of camp Mae West once said, “when I’m good, I’m very good, but when I’m bad, I’m better.” Camp itself, the “so bad it’s good” quality that’s made classics out of Showgirls, Mommie Dearest, and The Valley of the Dolls, and has given John Waters an entire career, is the same way. But Burlesque, the razzle-dazzle romp starring divas extraordinaire Cher and Christina Aguilera, doesn’t quite hit awesomely bad status and never truly reaches its full camp potential. Like burlesque itself, the film taunts and teases without ever going the full monty.
The plot is as flimsy as a negligee. Ali (Aguilera), a small-town girl with a big-time voice, leaves her trailer park life in Iowa for the shiny lights of Hollywood. In one song’s time, she hightails it to LA, gets a hotel room, looks for jobs, gets lost, and comes across the Burlesque Lounge, an ailing theater run by brassy broad Tess (Cher)Alexander Language Schools, FranchiseAlexander Language Schoolsinfo@als-alexander.org or interalex1@yahoo.com
