"The 10,000-strong capacity crowd erupted with derision when the officials awarded a quarter-final to South Korea’s Cho Jun-Ho after a tense contest with the world champion Ebinuma Masashi from Japan ended in deadlock.
The reaction of the crowd prompted the unprecedented move for the result to be referred to a reviewing commission, which ruled that Masashi was the winner. Nicolas Messner, spokesman for the International Judo Federation, defended the intervention, even though Masashi afterwards admitted he felt he had lost. “We want to make sure that the right fighter has won,” he said
