Russia: "Ukrainians executed Russian prisoners of war" Moscow complains
Russian Defense Ministry cites video circulating online of cold-blooded execution of Russian soldiers
The Russian Defense Ministry announced today that Ukraine executed more than 10 Russian prisoners of war by point-blank gunshots to the head, accusing Kyiv of committing war crimes that Moscow says the West is ignoring.
The Defense Ministry's announcement was in response to a video circulating on Russian social media that it claims shows the execution of Russian prisoners of war. Reuters could not immediately verify either the video or the Russian Defense Ministry's claim. "This brutal killing of Russian servicemen is neither the first nor the only war crime," the Defense Ministry said.
"This is common practice in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, actively supported by the Kiev regime and blatantly ignored by its Western patrons," the statement added. In this video, what appears to be Russian soldiers lying on the ground in Makiivka in eastern Ukraine after they surrendered. Then gunshots are heard and the video shows the bodies. Ukraine has repeatedly accused Russia of war crimes, allegations Russia has denied.
The Russian Defense Ministry underlined that the video shows "the deliberate and methodical killing of more than ten stationary Russian soldiers by degenerate Ukrainian soldiers with point-blank shots to the head." He added that the video is an indication of the "heinous nature" of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his "regime" in Kyiv, noting that he "will answer before the court of History, the people of Russia and Ukraine." There was no immediate response from Kyiv to Moscow's complaint.
