"Sept. 12, 2011 -- High cholesterol levels are associated with changes in the brain that are characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease, a new study shows.
For the study, which is published in the journal Neurology, researchers used blood tests to measure cholesterol in 147 Japanese adults 10 to 15 years before their deaths. Fifty of them (or 34%) had been diagnosed with dementia.
Tissue samples from their brains were then examined on autopsy.
Those who had total cholesterol levels over 224 mg/dL in mid- to late life, before they had any symptoms of Alzheimer’s, were at least seven times more likely to have beta-amyloid plaques in their brains by the time they died, compared to people whose cholesterol was under 173 mg/dL. The American Heart Association considers total cholesterol levels below 200 mg/dL to be desirable."

"Sept. 1, 2011 -- Strokes in children, teens, and young adults are increasing at an alarming rate in the U.S., according to a new study.

Mary G. George, MD, MSPH, and colleagues from the CDC looked at national hospital discharge data from 42 states. They focused on three age groups: 5-14, 15-34, and 35-44. The researchers compared the rate of stroke among these groups from 1995-1996 to 2007-2008.

"The increase in the stroke hospitalization rate from 1995 to 2008 was 30% to 37% higher" among those aged 15-44, says George. The increase was more common in older age groups than the children ages 5 to 14. "In the young adults and adolescents, we were surprised to see that large of an increase."

The researchers also tracked traditional risk factors for stroke. "We found significant increases in high blood pressure, lipid [cholesterol] disorders, diabetes, tobacco use, and obesity ... things we consider traditional risk factors," she tells WebMD."

The shored-up Czech banking sector continues to be a refuge amid the squall of the eurozone debt crisis. But the wave of market fears that Europe's largest financial institutions are more exposed to debt in peripheral countries than previously thought will crash on non-eurozone shores soon enough, analysts say.

The results of the most recent stress test released Aug. 30 by the Czech National Bank (ČNB) were encouraging if unsurprising, considering the country's history of conservative banking. The average capital adequacy ratio, a measure of a bank's capital compared to its risk, remained high in June at 15.9 percent, well above the required 8 percent.

"There is still large liquidity surplus in the system, which makes Czech banks independent in terms of financing from their mother companies based abroad," said Patrik Rožumberský, an analyst with UniCredit Bank.
