Burying Fukushima?

Cynthia Wagner's picture
On solutions to the nuclear crisis in Japan: If the decision is made to entomb the entire Fukushima complex, as has been most recently recommended by physicist Michio Kaku, at least one constituency needs to be informed: The future.
In the 1990s, the concern among American nuclear physicists was over nuclear waste and how to warn future generations of its existence. What signage would be required? What barbed-wire fence would last for 10,000 years?
From "The 10,000-Year Warning: Alerting Future Civilizations about Our Nuclear Waste" by Gary Kliewer, in the September-October 1992 issue of THE FUTURIST:
"How could you label Pandora's box so that no one would mess with it for 10,000 years?
"The U.S. Department of Energy recently asked a panel of experts to design a marking system that would warn people against digging into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in southeastern New Mexico, where radioactive materials from U.S. nuclear defense operations will be permanently entombed. The markers need to last as long as the danger, and this waste will pose a threat to human health for 300 generations.
...
"The panel confronted a number of challenging questions: How do you make a sign that will never fade away? What languages do you use? What surface do you write the message on? How do you relay a clear message to an audience so distant in time that you cannot know its culture, politics, level of technology, or religion?"
One of the answers to those questions drew from ancient wisdom: using symbols like the hieroglyphics carved in Eygptian pyramids, so the messages would convey our warnings pictorially.
Kliewer wrote:
"By setting down in granite symbols the contradictory messages of the creative and destructive powers of our technology, perhaps we are leaving a far better message in the desert than we intend. Our descendants will see that we, a civilization lost in their distant past, cared for their safety. Perhaps they will also see that we understood both the natural world and our place in it. Our warning will imply the hope that they too will look ahead for the well-being of their descendants."

Grassing Over Cornfields Could Reduce Surface Temperatures

New research from Stanford University shows that planting grasses and other perennial plants in the place of corn, soybeans, and other annual (cash crop) species in California and surrounding states would not only help mitigate man-made climate change, but would also result in lower ground temperatures, at least locally.
“We’ve shown that planting perennial bioenergy crops can lower surface temperatures by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit [1°C] locally, averaged over the entire growing season,” said scientist David Lobel, “That's a pretty big effect, enough to dominate any effects of carbon savings on the regional climate.”
Perennial plants such as switchgrass release much more water vapor into the air on a yearly basis than do crops like corn. Water vapor helps cool surface temperature. “Locally, the simulated cooling is sufficiently large to partially offset projected warming due to increasing greenhouse gases over the next few decades,” the authors write in their paper published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
In a related study, Lobel and other researchers found that corn and maize crops are more susceptible to small increases in climactic temperature than had been previously thought.
Read the full paper, “Direct climate effects of perennial bioenergy crops in the United States” by Matei Georgescu, David B. Lobell, and Christopher B. Field: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences: http://iis-db.stanford.edu/pubs/23121/PNAS-2011-Georgescu-1008779108.pdf

Leading Causes of Disability

Your odds of becoming disabled before you retire are about one in three. That might be higher than you expect. You might also be surprised by the most likely causes of disability.

"People tend to think about disability in terms of catastrophic events, like a terrible car accident that leaves you paralyzed or in a nursing home," says Richard Frank, PhD, deputy assistant secretary for disability, aging, and long-term care policy at the Department of Health and Human Services in Washington. "They don't think about disability caused by things that are less dramatic and much more common."

Spirit's Silence Haunts, Opportunity Roves on to Endeavour

The Mars Exploration Rover mission experienced a month of highs tempered by one haunting low as it neared completion of its 87th month of a three-month tour this month. While Opportunity wrapped up its work at the youngest, freshest crater the rovers have explored to date, Spirit remained silent as the point of maximum sunshine for the Martian year came and went, further dimming once high hopes that the rover would phone home and rove on as summer settled on the southern hemisphere of Mars.

Today the MESSENGER mission held a press briefing to show off some of the first images and other data that are streaming in from the spacecraft, now that it has entered Mercury orbit. Before I get to the more substantial stuff I'll just post my favorite image released today, a dramatically lit view of terrain near the north pole, terrain that hasn't before been viewed by a spacecraft. It's covered with secondaries; there are chains of craters; and the low lighting makes it easy to spot the characteristic undulating ridge of one of Mercury's ubiquitous thrust faults, signs that the entire planet has shrunk.

April 2011 will see MESSENGER begin the science phase of its orbital mission at Mercury, and should, I think, also see the start of Dawn's approach observations of Vesta. At Mars, Opportunity is back on the road again, rolling inexorably toward Endeavour. At Saturn, Cassini will continue its focus on Saturn and Titan science.

Before I go into mission-by-mission detail, here's Olaf Frohn's marvelous map of where all of our explorers are on March 1. Compare it to last month's diagram to see how things have moved.

Testing Sail Deployment - What We Do | The Planetary Society

Deployment TestThe first full scale deployment of the Planetary Society's LightSail-1 solar sail was conducted on March 4, 2011 at Stellar Exploration in San Luis Obispo, California.
The 4-meter booms pulled out the 5.6 x 5.6 meter sail in a test of deployer hardware and software, boom and sail packing, and mechanical operations. Project manager Jim Catrell and I were both on-hand with the Stellar team to observe the test.

FINDS Exo-Earth update, 4/1/2011 - What We Do | The Planetary Society

findsDebra Fischer of Yale and Geoff Marcy of U.C. Berkeley, the most successful planet-hunting team on Earth, are once again pushing the boundaries of planet hunting. Armed with a $40,000 grant from the Planetary Society, they built an innovative instrument they call the “Fiber-optic Improved Next-generation Doppler Search for Exo-Earths,” or, more simply, FINDS-ExoEarths. The new instrument has already proven its value: when attached to the three-meter telescope at California's Lick Observatory, it greatly improved the telescope's sensitivity and its ability to detect lower-mass exoplanets than before.

Shuttle LIFE

EndeavourYou've just identified one of the six organisms in Shuttle LIFE, a new experiment that we plan to fly aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour.

But to fly our microscopic passengers, we need your help!
The Planetary Society developed the two-phase LIFE – Living Interplanetary Flight Experiment – to investigate the transpermia hypothesis, the idea that a living organism might survive a journey through space to Earth inside a meteorite.
