Shuttle LIFE: About the Launch

The Planetary Society developed LIFE – Living Interplanetary Flight Experiment – to investigate the transpermia hypothesis, the idea that a living organism might survive a journey through space to Earth inside a meteorite. Organic molecules have been found in meteorites, so is it possible for a living organism to make the trip from somewhere like Mars?

The LIFE module was designed to fly aboard Russia’s Phobos Sample Return mission, slated to launch in fall 2011. Phobos LIFE has been made possible through the generous support of Planetary Society members. For the Phobos mission, a selection of well-known microorganisms are packed into miniature sample tubes, that in turn are packed into a nearly indestructible titanium capsule that looks like a small hockey puck.
