Vivian Girls

Vivian Girls embody a curious music phenomenon that has evolved in the past few years, especially out of the New York City music scene: the blogosphere smash hit.
A Brooklyn-based garage rock trio, singer and guitarist Cassie Ramon, bassist Katy Goodman and drummer Frankie Rose, Vivian Girls created a stir immediately upon their founding in 2007, or very nearly. The following year, 500 copies of their first single 'Wild Eyes' sold out in 10 days after the band received wide attention in American music blogs and by gigging first in their native Brooklyn before earning supporting slots with bands like Sonic Youth. The band's sound was loose, amateur and somewhat charming, winning them immediate fans throughout the five boroughs.
At first listen, 'Wild Eyes' is pure garage rock, but the three-part slightly off-kilter harmonies bring it a far eerier, melancholic territory. Vivian Girls' voices sound like punks on Quaaludes, barely managing to stay in tune. This is lo-fi performance on songs that seem destined to fall apart but never quite do, the wash of reverb-soaked guitar creating a wave of sound that gives the music much of its momentum and covers up the holes between the back-beat, bare-bones drumming."
