EVERYDAY HEALTH - Could Alcohol Be Causing My Weight Gain? - Diet and Nutrition Center, Oct 31, 2011

Dr. Caroline Apovian

"Q: I weigh more now than I ever have in my life, despite the fact that I started working out two months ago, try to eat four small meals a day, and feel like I'm in good health otherwise. I usually have one or two glasses of red wine in the evening, especially lately because I've been stressed about my mother's health and a program I'm taking — some evenings I've had more than two glasses. Could this be the cause of my weight issues?
— Mary, California
A:
Alcohol can be a major source of calories, so this may be the cause of your weight gain. One glass of wine contains about 120 calories (and as many as 150 calories for a larger glass). If you drink two to three glasses of wine every evening, you may be consuming 300 to 450 extra calories per day. This can result in a pound of weight gain every one or two weeks!"
