Medscape - Glaucoma Screening: What You Need to Know: Glaucoma, Jan 11, 2012

"In 2010, 60.5 million people were estimated to be suffering from glaucoma worldwide, with a predicted increase to 79.6 million by 2020.[1] Glaucoma is defined as a group of progressive eye conditions that lead to irreversible damage to the optic nerve and is divided into open-angle and narrow-angle glaucoma (Figure). Open-angle glaucoma is far more prevalent in the United States, affecting 70%-80% of cases of glaucoma.[1] Narrow-angle or angle-closure glaucoma is more prevalent in the Asian population. The distinction between open, narrow, or closed angle glaucoma is made by characterizing the configuration of the structures that constitute the internal drainage system of the eye. These structures lie at the junction of the cornea and iris, and is thus called the "angle." Open-angle glaucoma is usually accompanied by increased intraocular pressure, although reports suggest that pressure can be normal in more than 25% of cases."
